Jocko library events

 The Jocko Valley Library of Arlee would like to announce the upcoming Summer Reading Program events taking place at the library in the basement of the Arlee Brown Building: Thursday, June 25:  StoryTime and book beat, a rhythm Game at 1:30 p.m., July 9: crafting at 1:30 p.m. On July 4, the library will hold its annual book sale and open house. Buying books from the library helps the library purchase new books for you to read! Would you like a free book every month? The Jocko Valley Library joins the Arlee CDC in sponsoring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Stop by the library to sign up your young reader(s) and they will receive one free book every month.

Free community dinner

Fellowship Baptist Church (formerly Mission View Community Fellowship) will be holding a free community dinner on Thursday, June 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. We will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, assorted salads and desserts. Please join us! We are located at No. 2 - Seventh Ave East across from the Health Care Plus building.

Flute workshop

Troy Good Medicine De Roche will conduct a two hour workshop on Native American flutes  from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 25 at The People’s Center in Pablo. Class space is limited so register early to reserve your spot. Mission Rodeo

Polson Fairgrounds Inc. will be hosting the Mission Mountain PRCA Rodeo, to be held on June 26-27 at the Polson Fairgrounds Arena. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12. Hangin Art music

Music at the Hangin Art Gallery and Coffee House on U.S. Highway 93 in Arlee will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26, featuring Larry Hirshberg’s acoustic originals.

Polson Friday Flick

Polson city library “Friday Flicks” and Friday “Game Days” are held from 2-4 p.m. in the library meeting room. Anyone is welcome. Friday, June 26 Friday Flick is “Matilda.”

Saturday, June 27

Big Arm Festival

 Come join firemen and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Big Arm Fire Company in Big Arm (the big red building with fire trucks!) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 27. Firemen will be showing off the beautiful trucks and their equipment while selling gourmet hamburgers, salads, desserts and all the fixins - there will be water balloon and water cannon wars, something known as a “cow drop,” raffles, live music, a children’s carnival of activities - a bounce house and magic and more, and great fun. Next door is the Big Arm Association’s community flea market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

PHS ’64 reunion

The Polson High School class of 1964 is holding its 45th reunion on Saturday, June 27 at Bill Schultz’s home at 35218 Rocky Point Road. Friends, relatives and teachers are welcome to join for food and fellowship.

Fantasy art show

On Sunday, June 28, the Red Poppy will host the opening of Zack Cantlon’s gallery show of “Fantasy Art,” on display until the fourth week in July.  On the stage at 2 p.m., Dan Dubuque will present a program of fantasy guitar music.  As always, the afternoon is free and open to the public, with a reception following the program. The Red Poppy is open from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, and is located in Ronan at 1st St. SW and Eisenhower (on Highway 93, South stoplight, across from True Value Hardware).  Call 676-3010 for more information or go to our website www.theredpoppy.org to inquire about the schedule for the wide variety of classes and workshops offered throughout the month.

Jette Water meeting

Jette Meadows/Lake County Water and Sewer District board will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29 at the Polson Public Libary for the district’s regular monthly meeting.

Agenda items include: 2009-10 budget approval plus regular monthly reports, the district’s  $1.9 million water district improvement plan is also scheduled.

Solid waste meeting

The Lake County Solid Waste Board invites interested citizens to a meeting regarding the proposed expansion of the Proctor area container site on Lake Mary Ronan Road. The meeting will be held at the Proctor Community Center at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30. For additional information, call the Lake County Solid Waste Office at 883-7323.

Arlee July Fourth parade

The 50th Annual Arlee Fourth of July Parade will take place at noon on Saturday, July 4. Registration and lineup will be at the Arlee High School parking lot. There will be 13 categories, a grand and float prize. Judging and awarding of prizes and trophies will be at the Arlee/Jocko museum. For more information call Alvaretta at 726-3167.

MM quilt meeting

The Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will meet on Tuesday, July 7 at the Ronan Alliance Church on Terrace Lake Road. This meeting will be mostly preparation for the quilt show. Note the time - the business meeting will be at 6 p.m. We will include Show and Tell, Blocks of the Month, and the usual drawings. Please think about ideas for education for the next year. Please bring your fat quarters for the raffle basket for the quilt show and items for the Country Store. This meeting will be the deadline to pay for and retain your spot for the Judy Niemeyer class on Oct. 30. There is already a waiting list. The quilt show will be July 30-31, and Aug. 1 at the Ronan High School gym.  There is a big change in processing entries this year. Quilts will  only be accepted at the high school gym, on  Tuesday, July 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone is welcome to enter a quilt in the quilt show. Entry forms will be available at All in Stitches and from Guild members.

MVBH meeting postponed

There will not be a July meeting for the Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen. The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, at the VFW Hall on Round Butte Road in Ronan.

Czech choir show

The Mission Valley community will host a choir from the Czech Republic called the Zvonecek Choir at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 13 at Sacajawea Park or the PHS Auditorium, depending on weather. The Zvonecek - Praha Choir will perform for our community on the evening of the next day. Activities like experiencing home stays with students and community members, enjoying the lake on the “Happy Hippo,” and a community dinner are all planned for the choir. The potluck dinner will be at Sacajawea Park at 5:30 p.m. on July 14 and we invite the community to come and meet the choir before they perform for us.

2009 Chuckwagon BBQ

The sixth annual St. Joseph Medical Center Chuckwagon barbecue auction, dinner and dance will be at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 at McCrumb’s Barn on Finley Point. Have a terrific dinner then bid on amazing and fun things like a trip to Hawaii and beautiful art work at our live and silent auctions and then dance to the Singing Sons of Beaches. Boating enthusiasts have an opportunity to play on Flathead Lake during the day at our Five Card Boat Fun Run, and then attend the BBQ. All funds raised go toward remodeling our oncology clinic to create better space for patients and their families.

Adventure camp

A Summer Outdoor Adventure for girls, July 23-28 will take place for the third year this July. Girls, ages 11 to 14, will increase their self-confidence, hone their individual leadership skills and cultivate their appreciation for the natural world, while learning outdoor skills such as backpacking, canoeing, and orienteering.  Deadline for applications is July 2. journeyBe has a new gathering time starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday evenings, with fellowship and food at 6:00 and gathering at 6:30. This is a forward thinking Christian gathering that is a place to gather rather than a church to go to. All are welcome without exception.

Ronan to serve two meals

Ronan School District  No. 30 announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program that provides free, nutritious meals to children when school is not in session. The program will run from June 8  to June 30,  Monday-Friday, at the Ronan Middle School at 35885 Round Butte Road in Ronan. Breakfast will be served from 8:30-9:10 a.m. Lunch will be served from 12-12:55 p.m.

Summer art classes

Summer art classes/camps for kids ages 5-14. All kinds of fun art experiences including collage, painting and mixed media. Three and four day camps for 8-14 year olds and one day classes for 5-7 year olds. For more information, please call Edna Lemm at 883-2990.

Baby sitter training

American Red Cross will offer baby sitter training from 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 13-16 for ages 11-15 at the Glacier View Christian School in Ronan. For reservations call Lorraine S. Frost, RN at 676-3500. Fee will be taken at the door.

David Thompson presentation

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 2 at the Polson Flathead Historical Museum, 708 Main St. Polson, will hold a presentation about the early explorer David Thompson. Clay Haywood, author of “Sometimes Only Horses to Eat,”  will talk about all the places David Thompson traveled and when he explored in our area. Haywood will also provide information about the David Thompson BiCentennial Celebration in Thompson Falls this July.  

Tales About Toys

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at the Polson Flathead Historical Museum, 708 Main St. in Polson will hold a presentation called Tales About Toys for ages 3-5. Lois Hart will show the toys children played with 100 years ago and tell stories abut what kids did for fun. Stay to play in the expanded Kids Korner. 

St. Ignatius vet center

A Veterans Center in St. Ignatius is opening as just a place for all vets to visit drink coffee or whatever. The Veterans Administration Representative will also be there two times a month for anyone needing assistance. If anyone would like to join the St. Ignatius American Legion McCarthy Post 106, this would also be the place to do so. This place will be open on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-4 p.m., it is located in the Salish home addition at 240 Blind Barnaby Drive (former Healthy Beginnings Bldg) for more information please call 370-2689.

Wool contest

The Make It With Wool District One contest will be held  at 1 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Ronan High School Library. District One includes Lake County. The contest is open to pre-teens ages 12 and under,  juniors 13-16, seniors, ages 17-24, adults age 25 and older, Also sewing for others (any age). Entrants must select, construct and model their own garments. Made for others, the intended wearer must model the garments. The fabric or yarn must be 60-100 percent wool. The yarn may be mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel and llama.

 The contest is open to quilts, afghans, wall hangings, table runners and 56”-72”throws.  For more information call  District One director Bernadine  Lake at 676-2173.

Miss Salish Pend d’Oreille

The Arlee Celebration Committee is seeking applicants to represent them as the next Miss Salish Pend d’ Oreille and Arlee Celebration Young Warrior for 2009-2010 powwow season. The main requirements are: Be age 8 by July 1, be an enrolled member of the CSKT or 1st line descendant, be an avid dancer, be single, with no children, have knowledge of CSKT Culture and others listed on application.   Interested youth may contact Aggie Incashola at 675-0696 or 824-0127 by June 30 to do a phone registration. Only those registered by the deadline will be given applications. Applications will be available to at the Arlee Celebration Grounds after the Memorial on the evening of July 1.

Class of ‘99 reunion

 Polson High School Class of 1999 has planned their 10-year class reunion for August 7-9. Fourth of July parade

Show some patriotism and enter the Polson Fourth of July parade. Any entry allowed, pre-register if you would like to be judged for an award. There is no official theme for this year’s parade but judges will be looking for creativity, imaginative and patriotic entries. Judging will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Linderman, there are many categories. The parade starts at noon and winners will be announced at the Freedom Celebration at Riverside Park directly following the parade . Pancake breakfast

There will be a men’s pancake breakfast and health event from 7-9 a.m. on July 8 at the HealthCare Plus Medical Supply building on the corner of Main and 7th Avenue East. Speakers include Dr. Nathan Buffington, MD, pharmacist Ken Druyvestein, RPH, and Respiratory Therapist, Randy Stuber, RRT will speak on Sleep Apnea. For men of all ages, the event is sponsored by HealthCare Plus. There will be gifts for each registrant. Breakfast will be served promptly at 7 a.m.  Seating is limited, so please call 883-3838 by July 6 for your reservation.
