Jean Wigton-Guertin

Audrey Jean Pryor was born on February 8, 1926 in St. Louis, Mo. On January 26, at 86 years young, Jean passed away into the waiting arms of her son, Theron, the love of her life, Del, and her loving granddaughter, Lisa. At her bedside were her sons, David “Gus” (Jenifer), Mike (Trudy), and daughter Judy (Frank). Jean grew up in Denver, Colo., one of seven brothers and sisters. In 1943, Jean and many of her friends had to leave school and work in the armory to support the war effort. She met and married Del Wigton, and when he was assigned to Germany, she moved to Plains, near his family. On his return they settled in Polson, where they raised their family. Jeannie worked as a cashier for Safeway, had a daycare, and found a love for bowling of which she won many trophies and pins and made many friends. Sadly, she lost her son, Theron, to leukemia at 16. The family moved to Hot Springs, where they met new friends. Jeannie worked for The Mercantile and did cooking for the dining room of the Florence Hotel, for the school cafeteria and continued her love of bowling. Jeannie moved back to Polson and met and married a new-found companion, Jerry. She worked for Super 1, owned Price’s Café, and The Lunch Box Café. She loved catering and baking. She went on to work the AM shift at Pier 93. In 2003, Jeannie moved to California to be with her daughter, Judy, and enjoy her extended family and friends. Her great-grandchildren enjoyed many of “Grandma Jean’s Massages”. Health concerns led to her living in Missoula, at Village Health Center (Assisted Living) in 2009. All who knew Jeannie knew of her unconditional love and support for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed but not forgotten; infinity. Jean leaves behind eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and other extended family and friends. Private services will be held in the late spring. John’s early home years proved difficult, and he was sent to live in Montana Children’s Home in Twin Bridges. He worked very hard at the orphanage. Life in “The Home,” as he referred to it, required him to rise early every day to milk the cows. Sometimes he helped empty coal cars, an all day job. But he never spoke negatively of his time there. He always said it was the Great Depression and he had three meals a day. Montana Children’s Home had a chaplain, and early on John heard about Christ of the Bible, His death and resurrection. He left the orphanage when he turned 18 and was a junior in high school. He loved sports and developed a lifelong passion for basketball, always his first love among sports. He also was a sprinter in track and even tried pole vaulting. He was always willing to play ping pong, shoot a basketball, or pass a football with his children while he was still able. On the first date with his future wife, Betty Lewis, he took her to see the Harlem Globetrotters (1950) in Missoula. John joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years and helped build the ski run at Neihart. John was passionate about finishing high school. He often would have to drop out and earn money before continuing his education. He finally graduated in 1942 from Missoula County High School at the age of 21. John joined the Navy in 1942. He was attached to the U.S. Marines as a medic. After basic training he had medical training and jungle training. John fought in New Georgia and the retaking of Guam during WWII. The war ended, and he was discharged in September 1945.  He returned to Missoula in December 1950. His mother passed shortly after his arrival.  Through a friend in Missoula, John met Betty Lewis, his wife of 61 years and the love of his life.  John and Betty were married, February 15, 1952.

Buckle up: Do it for the ones you love

The saying, “Do it for the ones you love,” could apply to many different situations.  A general axiom, the first person you should love of course is yourself.  What is that old saying?  “You have to love yourself before you can love others.”  While this is true, if you are truly thinking of others when you climb in a vehicle, whether driving or a passenger, you would always buckle your seat belt.  The reason being is that you would not want to become the “elephant in the car”.

"Dr. Irwin, I presume?"

Ethel Marie Harding
February 8, 2013 3:26 p.m.

Ethel Marie Harding

Ethel Marie Harding passed away Feb. 1. She was born in Fishtail, Mont., on Sept. 19, 1927, the second daughter of Milton C. Israel and Marguerite C. Hucke Israel. She was raised on farms west of Billings, in and around the Broadview area, until she attended high school. She graduated from Billings Senior High.  She married Warren G. Harding, also from Broadview, on May 6, 1943. After their marriage, Warren was shipped off to the European front in World War II.  During the 31 months he was overseas, Ethel finished school, and went to Calif. to live with her Aunt Marie. While in Calif. she attended Business College and worked to save money toward the down payment of their first home. They ranched and had businesses in and around the Billings area. They moved to a ranch west of Polson in Nov. of 1954. Two children were born to Ethel and Warren. Lana Clair was born in May of 1950 and Warren Greg 1951. While ranching, Ethel started her business career in the Sheriff’s Office of Lake County where she was secretary and Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Bill Graham. She then worked as Deputy Clerk in the Clerk of District Court’s office. From there she ran for Lake County Clerk and Recorder and held that office from Jan. 1, 1966 until Dec. 31, 1984. After leaving the Clerk’s office, she transitioned to State Senator from Montana Senate District 25 until Dec. 31, 1996. In 1974, after having just graduated from college, and while working in her first teaching assignment, her precious daughter Lana was unexpectedly taken home to heaven. Through this tragedy Ethel’s focus truly turned heavenward and all earthly things took second place. She was on a mission. It was her mission to win, first her family and friends, then Lake County, the State of Montana, and the world for the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 46 years, daughter Lana, and grandson, Ryan. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kim Harding of Ronan, Montana, Grand-children: Jayme and Keegan Lenker of Pasadena, Calif. Tyler and Katie Harding of Nampa, Idaho, Jenna and Trenton Harding of Ronan, great-grandchildren, Joncee and Kaizlee Lenker and Tatum and Colton Harding, sisters, Betty Rue of Polson Thelma Bartz of Helena, and the sister she raised, Sandra, and Sandra’s husband, Pat Henderson, of Green River, Wyo., sister-in-law, Beulah Kerber of Columbus Mont., numerous and beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many many friends. After leaving public office, she felt God’s call to develop a children’s ministry in Lake County.  This ministry has grown and expanded through the years, and with the help of many other dedicated volunteers, this ministry has impacted the lives of countless children, young people and their families.  Memorial services were held Sunday, Feb. 3. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honor Ethel Harding please feel free to give to the children’s ministry that was so dear to her heart. You may do this by sending a check to the Pablo Church of the Nazarene, P. O. Box 276, Pablo, Montana 59855, or online through the Ethel M. Harding Memorial Fund website: www.gofundme.com/1zbf5o. I am disappointed that she chose to publicize her conundrum before contacting the board to receive clarification of board decisions.
