The Ronan Maidens took the 6B district title last weekend, moving on to the divisional tournament in Kalispell this coming week. The Arlee Scarlets took second at the 14C, but not without an exciting fight to the finish.

Ronan

The Ronan Maidens went into the tournament as the top team in the conference, and proved over the course of the weekend why they were there. After receiving a bye, the Maidens took on Deer Lodge, a team that had given them trouble before. After taking a 29-17 lead at halftime, Deer Lodge tried to sneak back in during the third quarter, cutting the lead to seven. However, the Maidens wouldn’t be rattled, and held off the Wardens 49-40 to moved on to the championship. Alicia and Lee Camel each scored in the double digits, as did Micalann McCrea.

In the championship game Saturday Ronan jumped out to a nine point lead over Florence in the first quarter, much like they did a few weeks ago when the two teams met in the regular season. As like before, the Falcons were left to try and make up the difference in the next three quarters. Not until the third quarter did that happen, when the Falcons cut the deficit to five points. However, in the fourth, Ronan had a huge quarter, scoring 20 points to keep the Falcons at bay, taking the title by a score of 64-51.

Maidens (18-2) will face 7B fourth seed Eureka on Thursday at the Kalispell Flathead Gym at 7:20pm.

Mission

The Mission Bulldogs went into the district tournament looking for an upset, maybe inspired by their boys’ win the week before against an undefeated team. In the first round against Loyola, things didn’t look good for the Bulldogs, who fell behind by 15 in the first quarter. In the second, they woke up and made a comeback, pulling within six at halftime. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs continued their comeback, pulling within three. In the fourth, Mission stayed close, and a half court shot by Sydney Castor to tie the game at the buzzer missed the mark, much to the relief of the Breakers. Jordyn Eichert had a great game, scoring 18 points.

In loser out the next morning, Mission took on Deer Lodge, who had lost to Ronan the night before. Unfortunately, an upset wouldn’t come in the Saturday morning game, and the Bulldogs’ season ended. In that game, senior Sydney Castor led the team with 14 points.

Arlee

The Arlee girls have been a powerhouse in the 14C district for years now. That reign took a hit this past weekend in the most exciting game of the tournament. In their first round game, the Scarlets took on Hot Springs. They made quick work of the winless Savage Heat and continued on to Friday night. In a game against Charlo, both teams struggled with foul trouble. Arlee took a 9-3 lead after the first quarter, then Charlo came back to make the score 21-17 thanks to two three’s by Cheyenne Nagy. Arlee extended their lead to seven after the third quarter, converted 11 out of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to win the game 48-36. Alyssia Vanderburg led the team with 21 in that game, and Megan Shick converted seven out of eight free throws, including five in the fourth quarter, to score seven points.

Arlee took on Plains in the championship game. The Scarlets had lost by three points in each of their last two meetings, and were out for revenge. In the first quarter, neither team got a lot going, and in a defensive battle, Plains took a 7-2 lead after one. In the second, Becca Whitesell scored all seven of her points, including a three with forty seconds left in the half to make the score 13-10 in favor of the Scarlets. The third quarter saw both teams hitting their free throws but missing their shots. After a technical on the Plains coach, Bryndle Goyins made one of two free throws and the Scarlets were up 20-15 going into the fourth. Free throws became an issue in the fourth quarter, as the Scarlets went 4-8 compared to the Trotters shooting 6-8. In the final minute, the Scarlets were up 26-23 with less than ten seconds, but the Trotter drove down and found an open post player in Leah Thompson, who put up a nice looking shot that went in as the buzzer sounded. After a short celebration, overtime started. Plains jumped out to a four point lead, but Morgan Malatare hit a three with two minutes left to bring the Scarlets within one. Free throws would be the deciding factor in overtime, as Plains shot 9-14 and Arlee hit only one of seven. That was enough to seal the game for the Trotters, who won the game 38-30.

The Scarlets will take on Twin Bridges at 3:15 on Thursday in the first round of the divisional tournament.

Charlo

The Charlo Vikings took the long way around for a chance to play in the divisional tournament. In their first game, The Vikings took on Two Eagle River. Cheyenne Nagy put up 22 points to help lead the team to a 59-21 victory in that one. Next up were the Arlee Scarlets, who had beat Charlo in both of their previous meetings. Charlo stuck close through the first half, but Arlee’s sharp shooting from the charity stripe put the game out of reach. Nagy led in that game as well, with 14 points.

In loser out the next morning, Charlo took on Noxon. After a rough first half of missing close shots, the Vikings started being more aggressive under the basket, grabbing offensive rebounds for points. In the fourth, Charlo broke Noxon’s half court trap and were able to take time off the clock to win the game.

A few hours later, Charlo took on St. Regis in the consolation game. The Vikings used their height advantage, but the quickness of St. Regis caused problems, and at half, St. Regis was up by one point. Nagy came alive in the third quarter, scoring eight of her 17 points to put the Vikings up 27-24 going into the final frame. She hit another three in the fourth and St. Regis failed to convert free throws, leading to a victory and a third place trophy for Charlo.

However, to officially make the divisional tournament, the Vikings had to travel to Missoula on Monday night to take on Philipsburg in a play-in game. Playing in their fifth game in as many days, Charlo managed only two points in the first quarter against Granite. Due to a box and one on Nagy, the Vikings’ offense struggled. In the second half, they got things going, making the score 17-15 in favor of Granite after the third quarter. Charlo outscored Philipsburg 12-7 in the fourth quarter to win the game 27-24. Skyler Frame led the team with nine points.

The Vikings play White Sulphur Springs Wednesday night in a loser out type of game at the divisional tournament in Hamilton.

Two Eagle River

The Eagles took on Charlo in their first game of the tournament. The team had previously put up a good fight against the Vikings, but didn’t have as much luck on Thursday. After the loss, they dropped down to the loser out game, where they took on Hot Springs. They took an early lead, then hot Springs tied things up at halftime. The Eagles outscored the Savage Heat by one in the third quarter, then kicked it in during the fourth to win the game 46-39.

The next morning, they played St. Regis, who had lost to Plains the night before. The Tigers took a 10 points lead in the first quarter, and TER fought for the rest of the game to try and make a comeback. Unfortunately they couldn’t get it done, and their season was over. In the last game of the season, Shay Andrews had a great game, putting up 18 for the Eagles.
