At Polson in a cross-county conference clash, the visiting Ronan Maidens and the host Lady Pirates spiked it out for round two of their rez rivalry wrangle. Ronan swept their earlier opening round in straight sets back at the end of August. This time around, the two teams were more evenly matched in their level of play.

In game one, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a commanding 10-0 lead, only to watch it slowly evaporate as the Maidens chipped away to tie the set six times at 16s, 18s, 19s, 20s, 21s and 24s before a Madeline McCrea tip kill at the net and a Maiden spike delivered the first game in Ronan’s favor, 26-24.

Game two see-sawed back and forth in the early going before Polson inched ahead with Ronan threatening by pulling within one thrice 17-16, 20-19, 21-20. Thereafter, a Mikaela DuCharme spike, back-to-back service aces by Paige Noyes and a coup-de-grβce Misty Tenas kill evened the sets at one apiece.

After being tied in the early going, game three started to tilt in favor of the Maidens until the Lady Pirates nibbled away to climb back in it to knot the contest up at 12 apiece, the first of a half dozen ties. After 19 apiece, Polson surged ahead with a pair of Maggie Todd kills intermixed with a Ronan service error and a pair of trajectory malfunctions that ultimately proved terminal.

Game four saw a half dozen ties through the early going before the Lady Pirates shifted the momentum in their favor with a block along with a pair of Misty Tenas spikes supplemented by a trio of Maiden attack trajectory malfunctions further exacerbated by a net violation that precipitated a Ronan timeout at 16-9. The Maidens managed to recoup a measure of their composure, but at that juncture the trading of salvos intertwined with reciprocated service and/or attack errors would ultimately play out in Polson’s favor. Misty Tenas and Maggie Todd would close out the set with spikes, part of their collaboration on more than two dozen over the course of the entire match.

Polson will have already played Browning and will host Stevensville on Thursday at the Polson Middle School gym. Ronan will have already traveled to Frenchtown, then host the undefeated Libby Lady Loggers on Thursday at the Ronan Events Center.
