Soccer: Polson teams show improvement

Haislea Sternick, Mady Luikart and Sophia Moderie scored a pair of goals, and Tia Mercer added another as the Lady Pirates (2-3-1, 4-4-2) blanked Libby on the road Saturday for a season sweep of the Lady Loggers. Kaylynn Elmore had a pair of saves in goal.

At home against Bigfork for the second round of the Battle of the Bays series, both teams had multiple shots ricochet off the crossbar, post or football field goal upright. Polson had its best chance to take the lead three quarters through the second half when Moderie’s shot glanced off the crossbar and fell in front of the net, where a crashing Karli Owens attempt to apply the finishing touch into the back of the net instead bounced off the underside of the crossbar.

Moderie had both of the Lady Pirates’ goals, one in each half.

Polson was set to honor seniors Jazlyn Dalbey, Ellie Barentsten and Moderie at home Tuesday, Oct. 5 against Whitefish, after the Leader went to press. Boys to be honored on Senior Night included Jack Colton, Tray Lichtenberg, Kaden Nelson and Ethan McCauley.

Pirates earn split

Junior Braydon Luikart notched a hat trick, and Jack Colton had two assists and a goal as the Pirates (2-4, 2-8) earned their second win of the season Saturday at Libby. The teams were tied 1-1 at half, but Polson scored three times to jump ahead for good.

In their homecoming match against Bigfork on Thursday Polson keeper Kaden Nelson blocked a penalty kick 10 minutes into a scoreless second half.

Colton scored on an assist from Luikart for a 1-0 lead, but Bigfork answered with two late goals for the 2-1 win.
