Polson golfers held up well under pressure from some of western Montana’s top programs during the annual one-day Polson Invite on Monday at Polson Bay Golf Course.

Thirteen schools were represented, including junior varsity teams from Class AA Glacier and Flathead.

As expected, the boys team competition boiled down to Polson versus Whitefish, two squads expected to vie for a state title Oct. 1-2 back on the same course.

Nine of the Top 10 boys scores came from the Bulldogs (five) and the Pirates (four), who finished in a tie for first in the team standings at 302 strokes each. Third-place Libby was 30 strokes off the pace.

Christian Lund Paced the Pirates with a 74, followed by Torrin Ellis (75), Carson Hupka (76) and Hunter Emerson (77) all in the Top 10.

Libby’s Reece Malyevac shot the day’s best round, a 71, to claim the boys title. Billy Smith and Marcus Kilman of Whitefish matched Lund’s 74 for a three-way tie for second.

The Ronan boys were led by Ruben Couture (90), Dillon Pretty On Top (96) and Nash Niemeyer (97). The Chiefs finished 12th in the team standings.

Clare Konen finished fourth with a 91, one stroke better than teammate Ashley Maki, to lead the Lady Pirates to a second-place finish, five strokes behind Frenchtown. Meanwhile, Alyssa Pretty On Top and Kylee Niemeyer of Ronan both shot 93, though the Maidens didn’t have enough golfers to compete for the team title.

Macee Greenwood of Corvallis shot 74 to pace the girls field, followed by Katie Lewis of Frenchtown (78) and Aly Rose of Hamilton (87).

“We’re really pleased,” Polson head coach Cameron Milton said Tuesday. “We played well. Our improvement on both sides, boys and girls, has been incredible over the last year.”

Divisional play is set for Sept. 24 at Hamilton, followed by the Class A state tournament back in Polson the following weekend.

Also last week, the Lady Pirates cruised to the team title at Libby, while the Whitefish boys beat second-place Polson by 33 strokes.

The Pirates won the team title at the Corvallis Invitational, held in Missoula on Sept. 7. Hupka (78) and Ellis (79) were the top finishers in the boys field. The Lady Pirates had a short squad and did not qualify for team standings.
