Ronan's Payton Cates soars to high-jump title

| June 2, 2022 12:00 AM

At the State A meet in Butte, Ronan sent eleven competitors while Polson sent 10.

Among area girls, both Ronan and Polson had a pair of placers.

For the Maidens, Olivia Heiner was a multi-event placer in distance when she turned in personal bests in both the 800 and 1600 to finish fifth and fourth respectively. For the

Lady Pirates, distance runner Halle Heninger wraps up her prep track career with a sixth place finish in the 3200, while Taleah Hernandez tied fourth in the pole vault.

Other area girls who just missed placing include Ronan's Kylie Fetui, who cracked the century mark in javelin with a personal best. Also the Maiden relay team, who were nipping at the heels of the competition, falling just out of placing in seventh place, trailing by a mere two tenths of a second.

Among area boys, MT Tech track-bound Ronan Chief Payton Cates added state champion to his divisional title in the high jump, outleaping the competition with a 6-2 mark. Cates also placed sixth in the triple jump. In the 300 hurdles, Rueben Couture of Ronan turned in a personal best to place fifth.

Polson Pirate Drifter Skillicorn qualified for the finals in his forte, the long jump, but finished outside of the top ten. A slight improvement upon his divisional mark would have given him a shot at placing in the event.

Class B results

At State B among area girls, only Shonlea Matt of Arlee qualified to compete in throws with the shot put, but would have had to improve upon her divisional qualifier personal best by over three feet to have made it out of the preliminaries to compete in the finals. Two Colstrip competitors took the top two places, while Bigfork's Scout Nadeau captured third.

Among area boys at State B, Mission sent five and Arlee two to compete among eleven events. Among those there were only two placers. In jumps, Mission's Bryce Umphrey uncorked a personal best in the long jump to take home third place. In the distance events, Andrew Rush of Mission came in fifth in the 1600. Though out of placing in the 800 and 3200, he made the finals of both events. In throws, Mission's Canyon Sargent unleashed a personal best in the shot put, just finishing by a mere foot and change from placing. Although neither placed in the javelin, Kellen McClure of Mission and Charley Crawford of Arlee have been keeping their arms tuned for the upcoming football season in the fall with some hefty hundred plus yard tosses.

Class C results

At State C, the Charlo Lady Viking girls only had two representatives: Aida Cote in distance and Kyla Tomlin in throws and the pole vault. While they both made the finals in their respective events, the absence of incremental improvements upon their divisional qualifier marks left them out of placing.

Among the seven state bound Charlo Viking boys competing across nine events, two placed. In the distance events, Hayden Smith turned in a personal best in the 3200 to capture fifth place with a significant improvement on his preceding divisional qualifier personal best. Smith also turned in a personal best in the 1600, finishing among the top ten, but just out of placing. In throws, Tucker Love unleashed a personal best improvement upon his divisional mark by almost a dozen feet to capture fourth.
