Drilling project to slow traffic in Post Creek area

| February 20, 2025 12:00 AM

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and project partners continue drilling near the Post Creek Hill bridge on U.S. Highway 93 and warn drivers to expect 10-minute delays when traveling this route.

Beginning the week of Feb. 24, drivers can expect lane closures to be in place 24 hours a day with automated traffic signals directing alternating single-lane traffic through the work zone.

The drilling work will continue for approximately two more weeks, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

MDT is installing groundwater monitoring devices in the area to help with the design of the foundation for a new bridge over Post Creek that facilitates wildlife movement underneath the highway. The bridge is part of a larger project to rebuild the stretch of highway between Red Horn/Dublin Gulch roads to Gunlock/Olsen roads.

Construction, slated to begin in 2026-2027, includes widening the roadway to include eight-foot-wide shoulders; constructing a northbound climbing lane for trucks on Post Creek Hill; adding left-turn lanes at major intersections; and constructing a shared-use path.

The project is a collaboration between MDT and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
