Spring debris burning season opens Saturday, March 1, and continues through April 30 on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

To burn May 1-June 30, property owners will need a burn permit, available starting April 30 at the CSKT Division of Fire website, csktfire.org.

According to a press release from the Division of Fire, careless debris burning is one of the main causes of wildfire on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Property owners are encouraged to take the following precautions:

• Burn early in the day and check weather for afternoon or next day wind conditions.

• Have proper personnel, equipment and a water supply on hand and make sure the area is cold to the touch before leaving.

• Check the area the following day to make sure stumps or roots have not re-ignited.

If a fire gets out of control, call 911 immediately, and remember, it a fire escapes the landowner is responsible for all suppression and property-damage costs.
