Friends of the Children adds family engagement specialist
Friends of the Children–Western Montana has expanded its Flathead Nation program with the addition of a family engagement specialist. Polson resident Becky Slater will fill the role, offering two-generation support to families on the Flathead Reservation and advancing the organization’s mission to break cycles of generational poverty and trauma.
Friends of the Children–Western Montana seeks to drive generational change by empowering youth through long-term relationships with salaried, professional mentors – known as Friends – who support each child from kindergarten through high school graduation, for 12-plus years.
In 2024, the organization launched its Flathead Nation program, specifically tailored to address the unique needs of Indigenous youth and families. The program emphasizes culturally responsive mentoring and incorporates guidance from an advisory committee of tribal elders and leaders.
“The Flathead Nation program recognizes the importance of cultural identity and family engagement in youth well-being,” said program director Nicole Callahan. “Adding a Family Engagement Specialist allows us to provide more holistic support and ensure families have access to essential resources.”
The position is funded through a three-year grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.
In her new role, Slater will help families connect with housing, employment, and social services while fostering engagement in cultural practices. She will also organize family events and develop partnerships to support families through in-kind donations.
Currently serving 16 youth and more than 55 family members, the program plans to expand to include 32 youth and more than 100 family members in the coming months.
“We are thrilled to welcome a dedicated professional who understands the unique needs of Flathead Reservation families,” Callahan added. “This expansion ensures our program grows in a way that uplifts the culture and strengths of the community.”
Friends of the Children will host a public tour at the Flathead Nation clubhouse in Polson from noon-1 p.m. Jan. 30. To learn more visit www.friendswesternmt.org.
