Polson skiers race

Four Polson ski racers participated in the Northern Divisional Championship Ski Race held at Showdown Ski Area near Great Falls last week. The four were Tami Baker, Chad Wold, Mike Ratzburg and Keith Christian. The four-day event ended last Sunday.

About 120 racers competed from the various ski areas in Montana, Wyoming and western North Dakota. The top racers go on to the national competition at the Junior Olympics in Vermont, Idaho or Alaska, depending on their age group.

Baker qualified as second alternate in J-3 girls to go to the Junior Olympics in Alyeska, Alaska, in about two weeks.

Wold also earned points toward Junior Olympics with a strong finish in the J-3 boys' downhill race. His time was 20th overall, and 11th among J-3 boys. Ratzburg and Christian each had good times in the slalom event on Sunday.

Silence those barking dogs

Editor:

Polson has a terrible dog problem. Those running loose foul up the neighbor's yard, tear everything up, leave their "calling card," etc. The ones that are chained up, for the most part, bark constantly.

It’s about time something is done to permit decent neighbors to live in peace without the constant racket of a DAMN BARKING DOG.

We have a leash law; now let’s enforce the law requiring dog owners to keep their dogs quiet. It’s strange we should be forced to take action to stop the noisy dogs; seems like the dog owners should have enough sense to control their own dog’s racket.

Stash the razor, boys

It's time again for men of the area to give their beleaguered faces a break from the razor and let it all hang out.

As part of the Lake County Diamond Jubilee celebration commemorating 75 years of local history, members of the masculine sex are being asked to participate in a beard and moustache contest. Similar contests were held during the Golden Jubilee in 1960 and the Montana Territorial Centennial celebration in1964.

Awards will be given for the best beard, best mous-tache, longest beard and most original style. Crazy Days in June is the deadline, so men are encouraged to get started now. Women may not participate.

The contest is being promoted by the Polson Chamber of Commerce Retail Trades Committee.

Those who choose not to cultivate facial crops must purchase a button proclaiming them as "Brothers of the bush”

Those who fail to do that may be subject to a fine or imprisonment, said organizers of the contest. Businessmen who fail to participate will be required to wash the windows of their competitors.

The last time the competition was held, a variety of styles and lengths could be seen throughout the area. It is hoped that a similar spirit of bearded brotherhood will prevail this time.
