A Christmas story
The story of Christmas went off without a hitch at the St. Ignatius Mission Sunday service.

According to the Montana Board of Crime Control, 138 crimes were committed on either college or K-12 schools within Lake County in 2007 – as reported by the sheriff’s office.
Phone scam hits area
In the past year, Lake County residents have fallen prey to telephone scams involving extended automobile warranties. Local dealers are concerned that the problem may spread into 2009 and are mounting a community awareness campaign.

WHITEFISH — Playing basketball in Whitefish is a daunting task, but a determined team of Pirates marched inside the Bulldog gym, left it all on the floor, and came home with a 54-38 conference win just the same.

Polson grapplers have strong weekend
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Polson wrestling team split ways this past weekend, the top five going to the Tri-State tourney in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, and the rest going to the Eureka JV tournament.
Chiefs end weekend unbeaten
RONAN — Ronan knocked off two opponents this past weekend, crushing Mission on the road 59-15 in a game where a mercy rule was needed, and then gunning down Hamilton 53-46 in Ronan.
Bulldogs down Maidens, not Vikings
ST. IGNATIUS — Over a weekend of basketball in their hometown, the Lady Bulldogs took a 55-44 win on Friday over Ronan, then went down 46-33 on Saturday to Charlo.

GREAT FALLS — The Ronan wrestling team beat up on Whitefish 60-12 in duals, then sped off to the Great Falls Holiday Classic tournament where they placed five of twelve wrestlers entered.

Arlee has long weekend of duals
SUPERIOR — On Thursday evening last week the Warriors split dual matches with Florence and Thompson Falls. The Warriors lost to the Florence-Carlton Falcons 46 — 30 in the Arlee High School gymnasium. The warriors were out-wrestled in six of the weight classes, but picked up wins by Jake Trujillo at 119 where he defeated Zack Newberry of Florence in a 7-4 decision. Warrior Cole Rice at 135 lbs., and Jordan Lefler at 140 lbs., both picked up pins against their Bitterroot opponents. Damon Cordier of the Warriors at 160 lbs. defeated a tough and experienced Terry Dautzman of Florence in a 2:25 pin, while Warrior Brady Potts at 171 lbs. defeated the Falcons Josh Marquart in a close 2-1 decision.

Bison hang with NIC
Staying with it until the end with a tough conference opponent the Salish Kootenai College Bison lost to North Idaho College on Saturday in Pablo. With two starters, guards Moss Tanner and John Young, not playing the bison were still able to keep it close against an athletic team that has made a habit of widening the margin of wins against SKC in the past.

Neal and Karen Lewing recently were surprised and somewhat mystified at what they found under the front seat of their 2000 Pontiac. It was a Jan. 3, 1991, Lake County Leader!

Ronan takes Loggers in home duals
RONAN — The Ronan wrestling team narrowly defeated a tough Columbia Falls squad on Thursday when it hosted a dual meet on its home turf in Ronan. Fighting to keep enough bodies in weight classes and come up with enough pins for the advantage, the Chiefs managed to top of the Matcats 39-33 in the end.
The cold continues
LAKE COUNTY — The record-breaking bitter cold that settled into the valley this past week started with a winter storm last weekend that closed roads, downed trees and power lines, and resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man from Ronan.

The Lady Bulldogs went to the Eureka tourney in Mission this past weekend with a wins on their minds, devouring two formidable opponents, Thompson Falls by score of 40-34 and Eureka 31-26.

MOIESE — A suit filed this past week in Washington, D.C. is seeking to rescind the agreement on management of the National Bison Range Complex near Moise reached in June between the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the federal agency Fish and Wildlife Service.
Former Pirates to play in NAIA championship game
When Polson residents watch No. 1 ranked Carroll College’s renowned football team battle for back-to-back championship wins against No. 2 ranked Sioux Falls this Saturday in Rome, Ga., they might recognize a few faces on their TV sets. Former Pirates Mac Gordon, Ted Morigeau and Bryce Picard will all be making the trip.

Three new police officers have found their way to Polson, bringing their various skills with them.

Lake County has the highest increase in property values of all the counties in Montana, 103 percent. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the new appraisal since my May article about property taxes.

POLSON — The U.S. Census Bureau is beginning to hire for the 2010 census. The bureau is looking to hire 230 people from Lake County to help gather accurate demographic figures.

POLSON — Polson City Manager candidate Teresa Wall-McDonald declined the offer to become Polson’s city manager in a letter to council members, which was read at Monday night’s council meeting.
