Update from Helena
This legislative session will be very different. The House in the last three sessions was divided evenly between Republicans and Democrats. Now, there are 68 Republicans and only 32 Democrats, and 32 of the Republicans are new legislators.
Mission Valley Health Clinic closes its doors
ST. IGNATIUS — Maps and photographs, framed posters and a Christmas tree. The building’s beige walls and its wooden ceiling create a warm, soft light that makes you feel at ease. With racks of colorful books and childrens’ games lined up along the floor, the Mission Valley Heath Clinic felt more like a friends’ house than a medical building. Perhaps it helped that with a small, loyal and local staff of three, the clinic was actually a place to visit with friends as well as to see the doctor.
SAFE Harbor creates haven
LAKE COUNTY — There may not be a homeless housing shelter outside of Kalispell or Missoula, but employees at SAFE Harbor in Ronan are making sure those in need will have a roof over their heads, regardless of their financial situation.

Winter storm WARNING
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. MST Thursday. Between 6 to 12 inches of total snow accumulation is predicted for Western Montana and Central Idaho. The National Weather Service says to expect moderate to heavy snow through Wednesday night creating hazardous driving conditions and recommends travel only in an emergency.

Council okays alternate MVA site
POLSON — On Monday night, with a vote of 4-2, the Polson City Council approved a nominal lease of $100 per year to Mission Valley Aquatics if they should so choose to purchase the Tamsco property located on Kerr Dam Road. Several members of the council voiced their support of a new community aquatics facility, while others felt the land was too valuable a commodity for the city’s storm and wastewater applications, which would become more problematic once the Skyline Project is complete.

Ronan celebrates with holiday events and parade of lights
RONAN – A full slate of events last Saturday prepared Ronan residents for the Christmas holidays. Beginning with the final Chamber Christmas drawings, including the drawing for the 1967 Ford Mustang, and continuing with the Parade of Lights, an auction, a pancake dinner and boys and girls basketball games, locals were running around enjoying the various events that provided some Christmas spirit.
Christmas comes early
POLSON — Christmas came a week early for about 80 Lake County children because Polson’s Nancy Hausermann spent the last 1.5 months turning a cabin into Santa’s workshop and filling it with toys for Lake County children in need. Last Saturday was a special evening for children and their families who were treated to a horse-drawn sleigh ride to the North Pole before spending a few special minutes with Santa, earning a freshly-baked cookie from Mrs. Claus and an armful of presents tagged with each of their names from Hausermann and her elves.

An interesting sidebar to the centennial celebration, Polson’s first social club, the Priscilla Club, was also founded in 1910, the year the Flathead Indian Reservation was opened to homesteaders.
Share the Spirit: Community members band together to give back
POLSON — A nondescript warehouse on Kerr Dam Road has been transformed into Santa’s workshop as local “elves” volunteer their time to spread holiday cheer for those in need countywide. Share the Spirit is in its 12th year locally, organizing gift buying and presents for area youth who may have gone without this holiday season.
Among other things
So called “political correctness” has robbed countless numbers of people of experiences of joy in many areas of the country – especially at this time of year. There are areas where officials are afraid to allow lighted Christmas trees on government or school property; more and more greeting cards and ads are substituting “Holiday greetings” or “Season’s greetings” for Merry Christmas. Christmas concerts are now holiday concerts and singing Christmas carols is discouraged.

Lady Bulldogs beat Charlo in tough battle
ST. IGNATIUS - It was rough and tumble. There were plenty of players diving on the floor. Things were tight all the way on the scoreboard.
Chariots of fire, hearts of gold
CHARLO — A box with some strings attached, a spirited paint job and a host of animated Cub Scouts provided all the ingredients for fun at the Charlo High School gymnasium last Saturday afternoon. Cub Scouts in the Silvertip District (Ronan, Polson, Mission and Plains) competed in their annual Chariot Races, but this year the boys, and spectators too, were in for some extra special treats and a whole lot of fun.

Raising funds for public television
PABLO — Hard economic times have people considering what bills are expendable and what are needed. Usually the first to go is cable, meaning more and more people depend on “bunny ears” to get over-the-air television signals, a move that makes free, public television even more of a premium. Locally, that channel is KSKC, Salish Kootenai College’s very own station that broadcasts a wide range of programs, from children’s to nature documentaries.

Mission Mountain Movies: Unthinkable
Since the attacks of Sept. 11 almost 10 years ago, many movies have been made about other terrorist attacks being carried out on American soil. While these types of movies were also made prior to the attacks, the intensity, and realism, has certainly picked up in the more recent entries in the terror-genre. The relevance remains to this day, as we’ve heard reports, even as recently as two weeks ago, of plots to unleash destruction on American civilians. Most recently was the alleged planned attack in Portland, Ore. by Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a 19-year old apparently bent on “violent jihad.”
