Melvin Messmer
Melvin (Mel) L. Messmer passed away in Polson at the age of 66. Mel was born in Bowman, North Dakota on Feb. 11, 1952. He moved with his family to Missoula in June 1961. He graduated from Sentinel High School and the Missoula Technical Center. From an early age, Mel followed in his father’s footsteps and learned to repair major appliances. Mel’s knowledge of repair expanded well beyond appliances, he could repair almost anything. His thirst for learning never stopped and he was a quick study.

Tanner, Malatare successful in transition to college hoops
The Mission Valley has a handful of area standouts extending their athletic endeavors at the collegiate level on the hardwood of men’s basketball. The so-called multi-headed monster of back-to-back state C champion Arlee Warrior has a tandem who have joined forces at Northern Idaho College in Couer d’Alene. These are Tyler Tanner and Phillip Malatare, whose combined prep career point productivity exceeded 3,000 points. Tanner transfers from Dawson Community College, while Malatare will be entering his freshman season. Both accrued multiple all-tournament and all-state accolades as well as garnered MVP votes for their caliber of play in their state tournament appearances.
Polson-led Dream Team wins UM Co-Rec FB title
Institutionally recruited, scholarship supplemented, coaching refined collegiate competition is not the only game in town for many university undergraduate students, where intramural sports play an influential role in many of their lives. On the last day of October, the University of Montana held its Intramural Co-Rec Flag Football championship in which a squad competing under the “Dream Team” rubric went undefeated to capture the title 46-22.

Arlee fire contained
A fire near Arlee that began last week is contained, according to fire officials. The Rehbein Fire was located 2.5 miles northeast of Arlee, on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and was contained Friday, Oct. 26. The blaze was ignited on Tuesday, Oct. 23, by a citizen burning debris and grass, according to The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Division of Fire. A total of 14 personnel worked on the fire, as well as a type-2 helicopter. No charges have been filed and an investigation is ongoing. Open burning for debris is ongoing through Nov. 30.
