After graduation, she worked for a year as a secretary for a military base.  She met her future husband, William J. Witts.  She taught school in Minneapolis for two years while Bill attended college, after his discharge from the Army.  They were married on June 11, 1949.  In the spring of 1951, they moved to Kalispell to help her parents with their business Nash Finch, later called Glacier Wholesalers.  Helen joined St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and began her teaching career at Russell.  She took a couple years off to raise her sons, Arthur (Art) and William (Bill), returning to teaching when they were both in school.  She taught at St. Matthew’s Catholic School for two years returning to Russell Elementary to begin her career as a first grade teacher.  She was active in Kalispell Education Association and Montana Education Association, holding both local and state offices.  She returned to college in the summer of 1975 and completed her Master’s in Elementary Education in 1976 for Northern Montana College in Havre in Specific Learning Disabilities.  She spoke of the summers with a smile as she was able to live with her Aunt Helen and Uncle Frank, creating many fond memories.  Helen retired from teaching in 1986, after 36 years of teaching children in Kalispell. Helen and Bill were very active in the Kalispell community.  For many years they helped with the VFW and St. Matthew’s concessions during Northwest Montana Fair and Volunteered with Flathead Valley Ducks Unlimited.  They were also members of the Eagles, The Elks and the Moose Lodge in Evergreen.  After her retirement, she also volunteered at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in the gift shop and became a member of Church Women United.  Helen was one of the original members of Risen Christ Catholic Church in Evergreen and took great pride in assisting with the new church.  After the death of her husband Bill in 1993, Helen moved to Polson to live with her son Bill.  She joined Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Polson soon after.  She continued her volunteering at church and Cherry Valley Elementary, working with children.  Helen enjoyed all children, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Martha Jean Wise Crecelius
December 26, 2012 10:16 a.m.

Martha Jean Wise Crecelius

Jean Wise Crecelius was born on her grandparents’ farm near Buena Vista, Ga. on June 7, 1927. Her parents were Phillip and Vivian McMichael Wise. She had one brother, Phillip Raines Wise. In the early spring of 1945, Jean was working in the offices of the PX at Ft. Benning, Ga. A young lieutenant also ate in the same lunchroom. His name was Robert Lee Crecelius from Polson, Montana. After some cross-room flirting, he finally got up the nerve to ask her out. They were married on July 6, 1945. Robert was sent to Japan for a year in August 1945. Jean saved all his paychecks for that year to get them a start in their married life. They lived in several university towns while he worked on his PhD. In 1954, Robert got a job with Shell Oil in California. They lived in California until 1972 when Shell sent them to Houston. I think she was pleased with the move because it got her halfway back home to Georgia. They have been in Houston in the same house for 40 years. In 1995, they built on their 50 acres in Montana. For the last 17 years, they have spent 6 months in each place—winters here and summers in Montana. Jean raised four children who adored her along with many other kids who felt like she was their “second Mom”. These other kids all talk about her Southern hospitality and wonderful food and how she made them feel like they belonged to the family. The family joke is Grandma’s “magic freezer”. You opened the door and casseroles and wonder desserts just seemed to fly out! Jean’s four children are Mary Crecelius Sailors, Robert Wise Crecelius, Dr. Linda Lee Askew and Ann Crecelius Glisan. Mary is married to Gail M. Sailors of New Braunfels, Tex. They have two sons and four grandchildren. Her family is son Robert Sailors and wife, Aimee, and their sons, Hayden and Brighton of New Braunfels, Tex. Her other son is James Sailors and wife, Hollie, and their daughters Emma Grace and Lillie Ann of Houston. Robert is married to Chris Looney Crecelius. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. Their daughter is Corina Keene and husband, Nate. Their children are Nicholas, Tessa Jean and Kevin Robert, of Concord, Calif. Their other daughter is Stephanie and fiancée, Steve, of San Francisco. Linda is married to Dr. Beau Askew of Houston. They have a daughter, Laura of Pittsburg, Pa, and a son, JB of Dallas, Tex. Ann lives in Colorado Springs, Colo. Her three children are Joshua, Rebecca and John, all of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Beverly Burgin Wise, of Columbus, Ga. and two nephews, Phillip and Olin and their families. She had numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. Jean was a Southern lady in every way. Her door was always open to people and she was able to open the “magic freezer” and feed a crowd on a moment’s notice. She also loved their property in Montana. Most nights, she and Robert took a ride in their mule and went off through the woods, never knowing what they might find. She loved making huge baskets of flowers for her deck up there. The flowers there are incredible. Jean was a very giving person. She was always buying gifts for her children and grandchildren. If she saw something that she thought one of the kids would like, she just bought it. As her daughter, all I can say is that she was my best friend. We talked every Saturday. She was the family communication network. She kept everyone up to date on the others. I still have a purse full of Macy’s coupons so we can go shop!

Eva Sarah Haack
December 26, 2012 10:12 a.m.

Eva Sarah Haack

Eva Sarah Haack, age 81, died of natural causes on Nov. 28 at 12:52 p.m. at the Mt. View Care Center in Ronan. She lived a long life that could no longer contain her spirit. She passed from this world receiving the gift of many prayers and with family at her side. Eva was a woman of faith and belief that guided her throughout her life and gave her strength up until the very end . . . and, we are sure, guides her still. Her faith, like that of her husband Walter who passed away in September of ‘98 at the age of 73, was engrained and demonstrated in the life she lived and the lives she touched. She lived her adult life farming and raising a family on Sunny Slope just North of Polson. Farming was hard but rewarding work requiring many skills and challenges that Eva always met or exceeded. Her witness to her faith was in the life she lived and the life she worked . . . And she worked from a very early age. Eva, born to Peter and Margaret Kroeker Jan. 5, 1931 at 8 p.m. in Morden – a city located in the Pembina Valley region of southern Manitoba, Canada, was the eleventh of 13 children. She attended school only through the sixth grade when, at the age of 13, she had to quit in order to work to help support the family. Hard work was always a part of Eva’s life and didn’t change when she married Walter Haack, a U.S. Citizen, in LeDuc, Alberta in March of ’52. She then began her new life farming in Polson, which included helping in the fields, with the animals, as well as running the home and, in time, helping to raise their two children: Lonnie and Wendy. She was not just a “wife” but a true life partner, an equal in the farm’s success. She became a U.S. Citizen in July of 1957. Eva’s legacy, and that of her husband Walter’s, was to have planted in their children and their children’s children the seeds of compassion and commitment, along with a satisfaction in hard work and an enduring faith in God. It is an ongoing legacy that has touched many lives and has made a difference. And though Eva was often known for her sometimes hard, no nonsense exterior and her get it done yesterday attitude that came from a life of often hard times and hard work, those that really knew and loved her recognized that her hardness was only a protective covering beneath which beat a warm, generous heart. She loved to sing and could play the piano and autoharp as well as the accordion. Eva also had a good sense of humor, a contagious laugh and an engaging smile that was always a welcomed gift. We would be remiss, too, if we failed to mention Eva’s skills in the kitchen which she demonstrated daily. Farm wife and good cook seems a redundancy but Eva’s talents in the kitchen were exceptional and the good food she prepared daily, only one of her many tasks, was the fuel to the farm’s operation. Her donuts and poppy seed rolls with the morning coffee or as a snack before bed were the stuff of which dreams are made - and that she could cook so well while at the same time maintaining a spotless kitchen would be the envy of any magician come chef and truly was one of God’s blessings to all who shared her table. Eva is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Theresa Haack of Polson, and her grandchildren, Jonathan Haack and Tawnia and her husband Blain Marsh as well as their children, Eva’s great grandchildren, Caitlyn, Chaira, Callie and Josiah also of Polson. Eva is survived as well as by her daughter and son-in-law Dr. Wendy Haack and Richard Haskell of North Bend, Ore. Her surviving siblings are Betty Weibe and Isaac Kroeker of Morden, Manitoba; Kay Tews and John Kroeker of Wetaskwin and Edmonton, Alberta respectively, and Harry Kroeker of Merritt, British Columbia. A memorial service will be held at New Life Christian Center in Polson Friday, Dec. 28 at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Miles Finch will be presiding. Cremation and arrangements will be provided by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson. Messages of condolences may be shared with the family online at www.groganfuneralhome.com.
