SKC Math-Science Blue Bay Camp was appreciated

Editor,

I am a non-tribal member and a third generation Montanan. Everyday I am thankful for where I live, but I particularly appreciate and love being part of the reservation. It has been a blessing for my entire family, and I feel eternally grateful to the Flathead Nation for allowing me to share their land.

Their tribal traditions inspire me, and their environmental perspective helps preserve the natural things around us for coming generations. They look toward the future, but they always remember the past.

Recently the future and past came together at Blue Bay. It was a tribal event and it was a very powerful, positive, peaceful gathering. For five nights, Salish Kootenai College sponsored the American Indian Math and Science (AIMS) camp. There were 65 seventh graders from all over the reservation, and one adult counselor for every six students.

Every minute of the day, from the traditional tribal awakening until lights out, was exceptionally planned and well organized. Not only did students learn about math and science, but perhaps more importantly, they were taught universal values that transcend cultures. They learned sportsmanship, cooperation, respect for their elders, each other and Mother Nature.

I spent one day at the camp and I think every child was having a wonderful time. Everything, from wholesome meals and snacks, the field trips, boating, guest speakers, was all completely free. I am sure that some of the students would not be able to afford a comparable camping experience. For many it was the experience of a young lifetime.

Because thank you acknowledgments are limited to four names in letters, I want to thank all the people responsible for this tremendous event. Every staff member was hard working, enthusiastic, kind and caring.

Once again, tribal leadership and vision help enrich the lives of the people living on the reservation. A great spirit smiled benevolently on all associated with this uplifting adventure and everyone who contributed should be congratulated.
