Here's one way to rewrite history

| August 25, 2004 12:00 AM

Editor,

Given the current "controversy" over John Kerry's military service, where blatant lies and partisan sniping can rewrite military records of 35 years, only one solution seems plausible.

Our government should revoke all medals and decorations awarded for wartime service. If Kerry's heroism can be called into question, then all combat histories deserve equal scrutinization.

Alas, veterans need not fear being stripped of all decorations. Each veteran's respective political party could write their own histories and award their own ribbons and medallions. Political parties could even award extra big medals for those who contribute big bucks to campaigns.

We might even seek corporate sponsors, or even religious-based groups, to purchase medals for veterans and vacations to Disneyland. For instance, veterans who dropped napalm on third-world villages might receive the Dupont award or the Boeing Iron Cross.

Another benefit of private sponsorship of citations is that these decorations could easily be denied if a veteran was politically incorrect. There would be no basis for challenging lack of fairness if private entities assumed control of military decorations.

How about it, veterans? Are you ready to play by the Bush sleaze team rules? Will you give up your citations to keep a level playing field in this era of political backstabbing? Will you join the chorus attacking Kerry while turning a blind eye on the military service (or lack thereof) of George Bush?
