Do you know where your children are?

| July 22, 2004 12:00 AM

Editor,

I have an ongoing concern with our community. We now have a curfew law starting at 10 p.m. on the weekdays and midnight on the weekends.

Even though this law is in effect, on my way to work I still see minors walking the streets. When I discussed this with my co-workers they too said they see many minors walking the streets. This is going on between midnight through 4 a.m.

So I ask all of the parents out there, do you know where your children are? These children are your responsibility, not mine.

I ask everyone to make the decision to call 911 every time you see a child walking the streets after curfew. You cry over the deaths of the children around here, but still there are more out there not being watched.

I feel the pain of everyone's loss, but I mourn the irresponsibilty the parents have shown the children.

In my opinion, if you as a parent really cared, your children would be at home. It is now time for us all to take action. First, start within your own home and then on the streets. Do not, however, take the child home or pour out their beer. Just call the police. My husband made that mistake and was charged for contributing to minors.

Also, if you see a child take alcohol or cigarettes out of your house or anyone else's … call the police.

Once again I ask, do you know where your children are? We as a community should not take this lying down anymore. That is why we have the curfew law in the first place. So I ask the community to take action - the police cannot do this all on their own.
