Listen, keep minds open on issues

| July 28, 2004 12:00 AM

Editor,

I send in quite a few letters to the editor. One puzzling thing I have noticed when reading the 'letters to the editor' is that those opposing opinions critical of our present administration often appear somewhat angry and quick to label the writer in various uncomplimentary terms.

In my opinion, when we are unwilling to listen to others' opinions with an open mind and without attack, it totally shuts off any chance we have for reaping the benefits of interactive communication.

Well expressed opinions, regardless of what opinions they are, without rancor and with reason and logic can educate and advance understanding.

A mind unwilling to bend is a mind in atrophy.

This applies to individuals as well as groups, to a nation's legislative body as well as international assemblies, and to leaders of nations when considering matters of both national or international concerns.

This is how our great nation was formed and brought to a reality and is what will ensure our continuation. Anything less will ultimately lead to our downfall in this Age of Global Interdependence.

Every death in Africa from AIDS is a threat to our own health. Every inhumane act anywhere in the world affects us here at home. Every action anywhere violating environmental integrity personally threatens our very existence. Every terrorist act misunderstood for its true cause poses a real danger to our safety and security in America.

We desperately need open communication between us as individuals and us as nations. And regardless of points of view, we need them expressed openly, considered thoughtfully, and available for all who care.

Thank you, Lake County Leader, for offering us this opportunity to practice our skills in communication.
