Late Monday afternoon, a freightliner jack-knifed at the junction of Highway 35 and Fulkerson Road sending a logging truck into the ditch.

The 48-foot freightliner, which was towing an empty trailer, was traveling south on Highway 35 when its driver attempted to come to a stop behind a Schwan's truck that was waiting to turn left onto Fulkerson.

When the driver of the freightliner applied the breaks, the trailer in tow jack-knifed into the northbound land, completely blocking it.

Then, a Kenworth logging truck, north bound on Highway 35 carrying a full load of logs struck the jack-knifed trailer.

The collision took out the logging truck's front axle and sent the rig careening across the southbound lane and into the ditch.

Trooper Mike Gehl, who was on the scene, commented that "it was very lucky that there were no other vehicles involved."

Traffic on Highway 35 came to a standstill for an hour as officials transferred the logs from the logging truck onto another vehicle for removal.

Trooper Gehl was unable to release the names of either driver at this time but reported that both were male residents of Missoula. A citation has been issued.
