Mission loses hard-fought battle with Superior last Friday night
ST. IGNATIUS - The Mission Bulldogs fought hard against the Superior Bobcats, at home, Friday evening, but to no avail. With the score tied at 20 to 20 and four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Bobcat sophomore fullback Tyler McGillivray pushed Superior into the lead when he punched over from the two-yard line.
The score was tied by a previous Bulldog drive, ending in a 44-yard touchdown run by Bryce Picard. But once the Cats pulled ahead in the final minutes of the game they never relinquished the lead, winning the non-conference game 27 to 20.
Superior is probably the second top team in their district (7-B). St. Ignatius is in District 8-B.
Bobcat's Dustin Feasel opened up the game at the beginning of fourth quarter with a 27 yard TD run, giving the visitor a 20 to 13 lead.
The Bobcats' Feasel had 103 yards in 10 carries; McGillivray, 40 yards; and QB Josh Stroot passed for 282 yards and two TDs, both to wide receiver Blake Williams.
The second score, which put the Bobcats up 13-6 at the half, came on a 77-yard pass play from Stroot to Ericksson.
Mission's Picard finished with 125 yards rushing on 27 carries; while quarterback Gus McDonald and Fullback Austin Arlint each had 72 yards and a score.
The Bulldogs played hard, Coach Tom Petersen said. He was happy about that. But "it's also a disappointing loss since we had opportunities to win and didn't take advantage of it."
Superior Bobcats are a good, hard working and well-coached team, according to Petersen. "We knew we'd have our hands full," he said. Superior is among the top teams in the District 7-B conference, Petersen noted. The game was the second of three non-conference games. The Bulldogs are playing Darby in the last non-conference contest at home, tomorrow (Friday).
