Pirates are 3-0 with win over Corvallis Friday night
POLSON - The Pirate football team is off to its best start in years following a decisive 35-7 win over Corvallis last Friday night, but will face defending state champ Dillon this Friday.
Polson dominated the first half, mixing it up with running backs Terry Lundeen and Kevin Owen. Lundeen had two touchdowns the first quater - one passing, one rushing - and picked up his third of the night in the second.
Owen scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to give the Pirates a 35-0 lead going into halftime.
"The biggest key to the game was the job our front five guys (offensive line) did. Actually six, including our tight end. They did a great job with pass protection, but we mixed it up well on the ground, too," said head coach Scott Wilson.
The combination of Owen and Lundeen, coupled with solid work by the offensive line, was too much for the Blue Devils, who managed to get a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Wilson said the Pirates are fortunate to be able to mix up their offense so well instead of relying on just one person.
"We mix it up well. Terry Lundeen was our leading rusher this week, and Kevin Owen was last week. We try to keep the other team's defense guessing a little," Wilson said.
Quarterback Joe Locke went 4-for-5 for 100 yards, while Lundeen and Owen turned in 118 and 85 yards rushing, respectively. The Pirate offense has averaged almost 34 points a game in the first three games, which the team will need against Dillon.
"They have some very good kids who could cause some problems. They had a lot of big gains their first three games," Wilson said.
This is the first time the team has started out 3-0 under Wilson, in his fourth year. Polson is the only team in the Northwestern A conference to start the season 3-0, although inter-conference play doesn't start until next week.
"This is the best start since I've been here. We've never been 4-0. You have to stay healthy, and if you stay healthy, we should do well," Wilson said.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Polson.
