KALISPELL - The Ronan/St. Ignatius track team bolded the blustery conditions and made the most out of the meet in Kalispell Tuesday, April 12.

Several RSI track boys did well despite Mother Nature's attempts to foil the meet. Alan Skogen took second in discus, hurling a 132-0.

"He has been working really hard. He and I are usually the last ones off the field," head coach Aaron Griffin said of Skogen's work ethic.

Another promising athlete is Gus McDonald who tossed a javelin 157-7 to earn third, right behind Libby's Kyle Baker who surpassed McDonald by more than nine feet.

If McDonald wants to make it to state, he's going to have to push 170, Griffin said.

While the boys are showing promise in weight events, they are going to have to kick it up a notch in running and hurdles.

"We're at a disadvantage when it comes to relays and hurdles," Griffin said. "We take a beating."

Because of the condition of their track, and because weather has kept them indoors, training on those two events has been limited, Griffin explained.

As for the girls, Briana Malmquist highlighted the team by placing in two events. She took fourth in the 100m with 13.77 and fifth in the 200m with 29.63, which is pretty good for her first time in the 200m, noted girls head coach Crystal Pitts.

"It was terrible— we got drenched," said Pitts of the weather. "It had to be 35 degrees out."

At Missoula

The sun came out for the Missoula County Invitational and so did 28 varsity teams, some as far as Spokane. More than 1,000 athletes competed in the event that Ronan usually doesn't participate in, according to Pitts.

"Its good for the kids to see that there is bigger stuff out there," Pitts said.

Though the girls didn't place, they did break some personal records. Malmquist and Shelby Fraker tied in the 200m with 28.5, a personal best. Also in the 200m was Kelly McMillan who took a personal best running 29.6.

Kira Crenshaw and Kaneesha Benson were in the top 15 out of 36 girls in their heat in the 3,200m. Crenshaw took 12:42 and Benson broke her personal record with 12:44.

Benson also shaved four seconds off her previous personal record, taking a 5:58 in the 1,600m.

Stephanie Salomon triple jumped into a personal best of 31' 2 1/4".

The boys managed to place one athlete. Alan Skogen took sixth in the discus with a 139-4.

"He is the kid that is only going to get better in the weight events," Griffin said.
