HOT SPRINGS — In Hot Springs on Tuesday the Charlo track and field team held their ground. The girl's team won first place with a team score of 129 points at the Dave Tripp Track Meet. The boys claimed second place with a team score of 78,

Amanda Murphy finished first in discus with a throw of 120-1 and also finished first in shot put with a toss of 35-10 1/2.

Murphy's discus toss placed her in the record books at Charlo. The throw was good enough to be the schools new girls discus record. The record was held by Krystal Dumont who held the record since 1994 with a distance of 117. Dumont is the niece of Charlo's current throwing coach Mike Krahn.

"It's a new school record," said a smiling coach Bret Thompson.

Murphy also showed her wheels by picking up first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:10.39 and second in the 200.

Adri Hammond finished first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:44.76.

"I was really happy with her first attempt in the mile. The 800 and mile is a good combination for her," said Thompson.

Charlo's 4x100 team of Murphy, Amada Hout, Ma'rya Hungerford and Hayley Carr, took home first place with a time of 57.21. And in the 4x400 meters Charlo took home second.

We changed a little by putting in Hout in Hammond in the 4x100 and thought it was a good said Thompson.

Overall the Lady Vikings made an impact in every event.

"We had a lot of girls and chances to place. I'm hoping it will keep it going," Thompson said.

The boys finished second at the Tripp meet with a team score of 78.

Charlo's Shae Sammons finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.08.

"Today he only ran the 100 meters because he is injured," said Thompson.

Charlo's boys relay teams finished second in the 4x100 with 50.83 and the 4x400 with a time of 4:11.57.

In the 100 meter hurdles it was Viking's Bo Herak who claimed the top spot with a time of 17.75 seconds.

"I was really happy with him. He ran times really well in the conditions. Bo is going to be one at the end that could be a tough one to beat," said Thompson.

Jared Kingery took home first place in the 300-meter hurdles after finishing the race in 51.45.

"I was happy with Jared. It's a new event for him," said Thompson.

The Charlo boys should be very happy with how they did Tuesday in Hot Springs.

"We got a lot of personal best, and that's all you can ask of the kids to do better," Thompson said.

At the Missoula County Track meet last Saturday the lady Charlo Vikings placed fifteenth out of the mostly A and AA field. The girls track team placed higher than C.M. Russell, Coeur d' Alene, Spokane West Valley and Sentinel. The ladies are making a name for them selves in big competition and should be able to make an impact when matched against conference opponents.

In the javelin Charlo's Hayley Carr placed at eighth with a throw of 104-1. Carr placed even after throwing seven feet less than she did a week ago.

"It was good for her to place, it should be a good confidence builder," said coach Bret Thompson.

As of right now it's Charlo's Adri Hammond who is holding the highest vault in Class C with 8-6. Hammond's vault of 8-6 not only was the highest in Class C but also was good enough for her to place sixth against the tough region competition.

Once again it's the Vikings Amanda Murphy who make her mark in the shot put and discus by placing in both. Murphy's toss of 35-10 in the shot put brought home third. In the discus Murphy had a throw of 110-0 and was also good enough third.

"She is staying consistent with distance," said Thompson.

If Murphy stays on track this season and continues to grow and advance she should be able to make an impression on the state competitors.

For the Charlo boy's it was Bo Herak who put up some impressive times. Herak set a person best 17.24 in the high hurdles and 44.08 in the 300 hurdles. Last Saturday was Herak's first real live action of the season and he seems to be starting off strong.

"He started off really well in his first meet. He is running as fast as he did last year. It should be a sign of good things to come," said Thompson.

None of the boys placed at the Missoula meet, but the Ladies where able to place in four events and end up with 16 team points, but for the team it was a great chance for them to get out and experience live competition. The Vikings have been forced to practice indoors during the past couple weeks due to poor weather. Tuesday's track meet at Charlo was canceled due to the poor conditions. Last Thursday's meet that was supposed to be held at Hot Springs but was snowed out was made up Tuesday.
