Arlee had good showing at Seely-Swan meet
MISSOULA — Last Saturday the Arlee track and field team competed in the Seely-Swan meet in Missoula. The Scarlets finished fourth with 61 team points while the boys' claimed eighth place.
Arlee's Sam Tameler finished in sixth place in the 100-meters and the 200. Tameler also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet 1/2 inch. Sam also cleared 30 feet for the first time in the triple jump.
"Sam ran well and those are some of her best times," said Arlee coach Richard Bachmeier.
In the 800-meters Jonnell Wieder finished with a time of 3:01.40. Wieder's time was good enough for sixth place.
"She is working on pacing herself and learning to run the laps," said Bachmeier.
In the mile Annela Rova finished sixth with a time of 7:03.76.
Arlee's Alyssa O'Neil was only four inches short of reaching thirty feet during the shot put. O'Neil's mark of 29-8 put her at second followed by teammate Miranda Meidinger who tossed 29-6 and finished third.
In discus Meidinger finished second with a throw of 94-1. O'Neil has thrown 30-5 this season and Bachmeier said he is looking forward to her progressing during the second half of the season.
"They (O'Neil and Meidinger) are getting better in the shot and discus. They will be contenders," said Bachmeier.
In long jump Arlee's Whitney Tameler aired out a distance of 15-7 and finished first. Whitney's jump was her best mark of the season and missed going the Top Ten meet in Missoula by 3/4 of a inch. Whitney also claimed third in the triple jump with a distance of 31-8.
"She is getting back to where she used to be in the past," said Bachmeier.
Adrianna Willoughby also placed in the triple jump with a distance of 30-2.
"It was nice, Sam and Adrianna cleared 30 feet for the first time," said Bachmeier.
High flying Annie Rice cleared 9-0 topping the girls pole vault event. Rice's marks during the season were good enough to get her a invite to the Top Ten meet in Missoula on Tuesday.
"Her (Rice) goal is to win state, no matter what the height is," said Bachmeier.
In boys action Arlee's Jacob Santos finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:20.81 and fifth in the mile with 5:14.00. The 800 was a photo finish, only a tenth of a second separated Santos from teammate Todd Espinoza who recorded a time of 2:20.82.
Santos also tied for fourth place in the pole vault with a personal best height of 9-6.
"He did well in the vaulting and his times are coming down in the longer events," Bachmeier said.
Daniel Old Person finished in sixth place in the grueling two mile run with a time of 12:02.84.
"He is doing good for a freshman," said Bachmeier.
Arlee's Danny Miles only competed in the high jump on Saturday. Miles cleared 5-4 in the high jump and tied for sixth place.
Miles is still nursing a leg injury and would rather wait until he is topnotch before returning to other events.
Arlee's next action will be tomorrow (Friday) as they face Florence at Missoula Big Sky.
