Secondhand smoke is bad stuff

| August 18, 2005 12:00 AM

Editor,

Thank you for publishing the article "Smoke-free law won't hurt businesses." I found it as I was doing research on cigarette smoking on the Internet. I am glad to hear that one more government (Montana) has decided to protect the non-smoker's right to breathe healthy air.

It has been proven that secondhand cigarette smoke is very unhealthy and can cause disease, and poor health. Effects of secondhand smoke include lowered lung function, and impaired blood circulation. Air cleaners can filter out the particulate matter, but there are also gases (including carbon monoxide and formaldehyde) in secondhand smoke that air cleaners cannot mitigate. This is why I believe smokers should smoke outside.

Non-smokers should not have the unhealthful decisions of smokers imposed upon them.

Hopefully, many people — especially young people working in restaurants — will benefit from the new law. Although I'm from Ohio, I'm glad that many people in Montana will be saved from secondhand cigarette smoke.
