Don't allow zoning change for Wal-Mart

| December 28, 2005 12:00 AM

Editor,

I write this because I believe the letters to date discussing the ill effects on our community if the super Wal-Mart is allowed has fallen on deaf ears.

Wal-Mart will say they will do whatever is required including funding an "unbiased" study to get their way. What they can't do is build without a zoning change.

The area Wal-Mart wants is zoned "Residential" and must be changed to "Commercial" for their use. Our (your) action to prevent Wal-Mart from steamrolling their whims on us is to convince our planners/council members to stick to the existing zoning plans. The area in question should be reserved for residential development and the planners should just say "no" to the request for change.

Obviously, the majority of the constituents and the planners/council members are satisfied with the existing Wal-Mart store and don't want a super Wal-Mart. Hence, the wishes of the people should apply. Let Wal-Mart compete with the other big box stores in the Kalispell-Whitefish-Columbia Falls urban area.

Find out who will vote your interest and ensure he/she does. Also, how each person votes on the zoning change must be made public for us all to know the results.
