Community raises $4,500 for tsunami victims

POLSON — Hundreds of folks turned out to raise money for tsunami victims at the Lake City Bakery and Eatery last Saturday evening, generating almost $4,500 on behalf of victims from last month's tragedy.

The total amount raised was even more remarkable given the fact that contributions for the burgers, hot dogs, fries, apple pie and soda were all voluntary. Some folks stopped by to contribute money without even eating.

"We just tell people to go put whatever amount they want to contribute into the box," said owner Marilyn Humphrey as she surveyed the scene. "People have been really good at giving."

Humphrey estimated they'd served more than 100 folks by 6 p.m. Before it was over, more than 250 people stopped by to contribute from 4 to 8 p.m.

Local businesses also chipped in, donating $775 to cover the cost of the food served. The balance of the $775 was contributed to the general fund, to bring the total to $4,466 in just four hours.

To date, the death toll from the tsunamis, which struck many Asian countries, India and parts of Africa on Sunday, Dec. 26, has surpassed 150,000. Locals said they were inspired to do their part to help worldwide relief efforts.

"I think this fundraiser is great. Every little bit helps," said Polson resident Mary Smith, who enjoyed a burger along with her husband Leo and son Brock.

"The food is always good here, and the people are always good," Leo said.

"When things like this happen, you feel it's your duty to help," Brock said.

Humphrey said any folks who missed the fundraiser but want to contribute can drop off money at the bakery anytime during the next two weeks.

"I'm so pleased at the response we've gotten. It makes you feel good to at least try and do your part to help," Humphrey said. "People are very generous around here. I was surprised at the turnout."
