'Podunk' Polson?

| July 7, 2005 12:00 AM

Editor,

It is interesting to read the Leader — at least for the most part.

Having lived in Polson almost 40 years, we see that some things never change. Reflection is good for the soul, gives credibility to the present and leaves the door open for the future. Hopefully, we learn from remembering those times which enable us to make room for that future.

We have seen many changes in attitudes over the years, but some seem to plague us again and again. Take, for instance, the article about the fundraiser for MVAS which featured the notable Jack Hanna. The photo accompanying the article was great.

Too bad that executive director Jennifer Sherman had to spoil this story with her inane comment at the close of the article, "this little animal shelter in podunk Polson is doing awesome," she said.

Well, the folks in Podunk, Mass., or Podunk, Conn., may take umbrage at such a comment. Podunk has as its other definition: Typically dull, insignificant, trivial or having no importance; low in character.

Sherman's short-time residency may have one coming to the conclusion that such a comment is abrasive to folks who have survived many years in Polson. We came here to raise children in a safe atmosphere, to impress our relatives "back east" with the beauty and depth of this valley and to always try to make it a welcoming place.

Sherman's attempt at humor is tainted. An apology is in order from her … er, um, unthoughtful mouth.
