Afton L. May

SILVERDALE, Wash. — Afton Leishman May, 86, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at her home in Silverdale.

Afton was born to William Hansen and Isabell McCoard Leishman in New Chicago, Mont. She grew up on the family farm in St. Ignatius and graduated from Ronan High School, Butte Business College and Officers Candidate School, U.S. Army. She enlisted in the Army in 1942, served as a 1st Lieutenant and was member of the Army WACs.

She later worked, and retired from, Keyport Naval Station. Afton was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served for many years as the president of the Young Women's Organization of the Bremerton Stake. She served 19 years as a volunteer temple worker in the Seattle Temple.

Mom centered her life in the teachings of Jesus Christ. She served others because of her covenants. She loved her flowers and her vegetable garden. One of her greatest joys was to be surrounded by her family and cooking in the kitchen. Her husband Daniel Harlan May, former sports editor of the Bremerton Sun and The Spokesman Review, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons, Dennis (Sandi) of Brownsville, Alan (Jonna) of Auburn, Wash., David (Lynice) of Tacoma, and Douglas of Silverdale; her daughter, Denise Snow (Scott) of Oak Harbor, Wash.; her sisters, Eva Nelson of Idaho Falls, and Donna Morgan of Angwin, Calif; 28 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren with more to come. A funeral service held Wednesday at the LDS Stake Center in Silverdale. Burial and grave dedication was at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton.
