Rodeo team has good showing at district rodeo

KALISPELL — This Mission Valley High School Rodeo team competed in the District 5 rodeo at the Majestic Valley Arena last weekend, and team members had good success despite having to juggle some events around because of the rainy weather.

With all the rain during the past week the rodeo was forced indoors and the arena had to balance the district rodeo with a horse show. With the house show and rodeo having to both share in the indoor space Saturday night's rodeo didn't start until 6:30 p.m. and ran until 2:30 a.m.

After Saturday's late night the rodeo members had until 3 p.m. Sunday to get ready for Sunday's final rodeo.

"I was glad we were inside. I would rather be inside than out in the wet and mud," said Sarah Guenzler.

Guenzler had another stellar weekend, taking the all-around rodeo title again. Guenzler has been the women's all-around winner for the past two months and is sitting in first place in the points standing with 1037.5 points. Jessica Milliron is in second place with 811.5 and Jessica Picchietti rounds out the top three with 773.5 points. Guenzler took first place in goat tying during both rodeos. She took first with times of 8.3 and 8.4.

"I'm consistent in my goats and breakaway times," said Guenzler when asked how she felt heading into the State Rodeo Finals.

Guenzler is not only consistent in her goats and break away times but she is also putting up some good times in the barrels. She finished second and sixth on the weekend in barrels with times of 17.00 and 17.64.

Guenzler and Picchietti are going to the Masters Championship in Billings to fine tune their skills before the State Rodeo.

Picchietti claimed second place in the poles with a time of 21.29, tied for third with teammate Milliron in the goats. Milliron had a first place finish in girls cutting and third place finish in the poles with a time of 21.32.

Levi Guenzler has also been making his mark on the circuit this season and is sitting in first place in the points race with 435.5. The closest to him is Sam Levine with 382 points.

Levi took second in boys cutting, fourth in calf roping and first in team roping with his sister Sarah as his partner.

In the bareback and bull riding Levi Hendrickson of Arlee finished first in the bulls with a score of 73 points and had a third place finish in bareback with a score of 63.

Most of the Mission Valley Rodeo team members will be practicing or competing in other non-high school rodeos to gear up for the Montana State High School Rodeo finals that are held in Helena, June 22-26.
