Bicyclists are urged to be careful

| March 10, 2005 12:00 AM

Editor,

It indeed appears that spring is just around the corner. We know Mother Nature still has a surprise or two for us, but it is indeed good to see the sun.

With this good weather come runners, bicyclists, skateboarders and all those activities associated with spring.

Inevitably, there will be complaints, especially from motorists concerning bicyclists. We wish to remind bicyclists that they must follow the laws very similar to those who are in a motor vehicle. Primarily ride on the same side of the road that motorists have to drive on.

Make complete stops at stop signs and give hand signals if planning to turn.

For small children, this is a lot to keep in mind as they ride. We hope moms and dads will take the time to work with their children.

We have never had a bicyclist win when striking or being struck by a car. The bottom line is that no one wants a tragedy.

In addition, bicyclists riding at night should wear light colored clothing, have a light for the front and no less than a red reflector on the rear of the bike.

We strongly urge all bicyclists to wear a bike helmet. Polson Fire and Police departments have a limited supply of helmets. If you desire one, please contact us at 883-8220 or 883-8211.

Have a safe and fun spring and summer.
