Charlo Vikings send 13 to state track meet
BUTTE — The Charlo Vikings will be sending 13 athletes and Two Eagle will be sending Whitney Brown to Great Falls to compete in the State track and field championship this weekend.
Charlo's Amanda Murphy again showed her power by taking first in the discus and with a throw of 119 feet 9 1/2 inches. Murphy also claimed the top spot in shot put with a toss of 36-9 1/2 and finished fifth in the 200-meters with a time of 27.94.
"She is starting to throw over 120 (feet) in practice," said Thompson.
Two Eagle's Whitney Brown gets to make the trip to State after placing second in the discus with 105-2 3/4 and a third place finish in the shot put.
Whitney has been improving all season and we are looking forward to good things from her (at State) said Two Eagle coach Brian Last Star.
Adri Hammond, Charlo's high flying Viking cleared 9-1 in the pole vault and finished first. Hammond also finished third in the 800-meter run after crossing the line in 2:33.01. Hammond is one of six girls who went over nine feet at divisional this year.
"She has run five seconds faster in the 800, if she can get that back down she could place at State," said Thompson.
Charlo's Hayley Carr will also be making the trip to State after placing fifth in the vault with a height of 8-6 and finished fourth.
"Hayley had a personal best in vaults," Thompson said.
Megan Harriman will be traveling with the Vikings to Great Falls after her fifth place finish in shot.
In the 1600-meters Charlo's Tomi Beck finished fourth in Butte with a time of 6:06.80 and had a fifth place finish in the 3,200.
"Her mile is right where she has been all season. She will have to get in the 13s in the two miles," Thompson said.
Charlo's 400-meter relay team finished third after Hammond ran in place of an injured Ma'rya Hungerford who twisted her ankle on the stadium steps. Hungerford still competed in other races, but not the 400 relay. The Vikings relay team seemed to do fine with Hammond running the first leg.
"It was great to have the opportunity to run our relay team at State. Adri was kind of a life saver for the relay team," Thompson said.
Hungerford did run with the 1,600-meter relay team and they placed first with a time of 4:22.15. Charlo's Samijo Kain, Hammond, Murphy and Hungerford will be the mile relay team at State for the Vikings. Overall the Charlo girls placed second in Butte with 75 team points.
Charlo's Joey Ray earned himself a ticket to State by placing third in shot put with a toss of 46 feet 1/2 inches.
"He has improved a bunch and is starting to get into it," said coach Bret Thompson.
The Vikings 1600-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:49.72. The relay team comprised of Bo Herak, Kyle Middlemist, Jeff Bucholtz and Trey Sinclair ran 15 seconds faster than they did at Districts.
Herak finished second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.39 and third in the 110 hurdles after with 17.40.
"Bo has run 16.90 this season. He needs to get faster between the hurdles," said Thompson.
Charlo's Middlemist placed second in pole vault with a personal best height of 12-0. His best coming into Butte was 11-6. Coach Thompson was pleased with Middlemist's performance and said it was the first time this season the team had a full week to practice before competing.
The boys team finished eighth in team points and will send five to Great Falls.
"It was nice to get some to place (State)," Thompson said.
The boys and girls will be heading to Great Falls today (Thursday). The team will have once practice Thursday night at Great Falls High before Friday's competition.
"I think it's a great atmosphere at the State," Thompson added.
