Wal-Mart has been good for Polson

| October 27, 2005 12:00 AM

Editor,

It is clear that the passions of the community have been awakened with the application by Wal-Mart to create a better store in a new location. In reading a letter to the editor in the Oct. 20 Leader, I felt compelled to respond.

My husband and I have lived in Polson for over 13 years. In that time, Polson has not lot its quaintness, even with Wal-Mart's arrival just seven years ago. Big box store Pamida was already here in 1992. Tourists still come. They get their ice chests or sandals at Wal-Mart, then go downtown to shop and absorb Polson's uniqueness.

The local businesses have survived, even thrived, because they offer quality brands and/or personalized services. Some businesses even buy supplies or equipment at Wal-Mart to keep up with their own customers' needs.

We have continued to spend at these businesses all along.

Wal-Mart has already provided information on the issues of traffic flow, public services and utilities usage. The impact for these issues is minimal. Their plan to lower the elevation and use an esthetic retaining wall to reduce store visibility is evidence that they are willing to work with the needs of the community.

The Oct. 20 letter implied that qualify of life would be lost. Our adult son lived with us briefly, but had to leave because he was unable to get a decent paying job in this area, and Wal-Mart was not hiring at that time. For us, quality of life includes the ability to provide for yourself and your family. The additional jobs and benefits by a larger Wal-Mart allows those employed from this community to spend their money at our local businesses.

We encourage all of you in the Polson area to find out for yourself what the real facts are. Don't be swayed by emotional, one-sided rhetoric.
