A betrayal of zoning process

Editor,
Prior to purchasing our home 10 years ago we researched zoning in the surrounding area, and were pleased that the nearly 28 acres Wal-Mart wishes to buy were indeed for single family housing.
We believed in zoning as protection, a promise. Therefore, changing the rules in order to accommodate a huge box store with its huge parking lot would, we think, be an abuse, a betrayal of trust in the zoning process.
Why establish zoning if such a drastic deviation can be allowed? What protection against zoning change does any neighborhood have, either inside or outside the city of Polson?
If this is of concern to the reader, please express yourself immediately before final decisions are made.
