Lady Bulldogs go 1-1 on the week, now third
ST IGNATIUS — The Lady Bulldogs won an immense victory over the Scarlets on Friday, but they lost to the 14-0 Trojans on Saturday by 15 points.
The Lady Bulldogs had a successful week even with the loss and they are taking a well deserved third place in the district.
"We have four games left and we are in third place," head coach Les Rice said.
On Friday the Lady Bulldogs went to Arlee and played the Scarlets. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead and ran with it, never letting the Scarlets catch up for a final score of 56-25.
The Lady 'Dogs were the first ones on the board as Barb Pfeifer made a shot from the foul line. Ashley Mitchell was at the top of her game and she started scoring the first of her 30 points right off the top with a two point shot in the first minute.
Kim Christensen forced a turnover on the Scarlets and drove down the court for a lay-up to put 5-0 on the board. Christensen came back again for two to bring the score 7-0 — all pounded out in the first minutes of the game. Right before the buzzer Christensen took another shot and scored a two pointer.
The ladies had a clear hold on the game and Mitchell opened up the defense to grab a pass and correctly position herself right in front of the net to score 11-6 in the second quarter.
Both teams had a few back and forth attempts without any gains until Pfiefer brought the score up.
Mitchell controlled the ball again as she walked through the Scarlets and bounced the ball off the backboard to score 23-10. The Lady Bulldogs continued to work over the Scarlets' defense.
Mitchell attempted a three-point shot and missed but rebounded to score a bucket for a score of 27-11 by the third quarter. Mitchell came back to drop a clean three-point shot off the side. Catherine Baylor scored a two point shot before the Scarlets took the ball after a heated fight on the floor.
In the fourth, Kelsey Cable dropped in her two points for a score of 53-22. Rice decided to bring in the JV for some experience and Kristin Sansavere put in one of the two point shots she made for the ending basket and winning score 56-25.
The Lady Bulldogs didn't do so well on Saturday against Drummond as they were brought down with a loss 33-48.
"We lost by fifteen, but they are a 14-0 team," head coach Les Rice said. "It came down to a 14-minute stretch at the end and the game was decided in the last three minutes. Everything went right for them and wrong for us. It was a tight game until they just exploded."
The Lady Bulldogs had the lead in the first quarter 9-8 but Drummond stopped the ladies in the second quarter with a 20 point gain to Mission's seven points.
The last half was a heart breaker for the Lady Bulldogs as the Trojans pulled ahead with the lead 41-23 and a final score 48-33.
Mitchell scored 19 points, Mattea Grant scored four points, Pfeifer and Jamie McClure each made three points, Kim Christensen and Kristin Sansavere each scored two points.
The Lady 'Dogs host Eureka on Friday and go to Troy on Saturday.
