Let progress come to Polson

| February 2, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor;

Many years ago I grew up in a small mid-western town much like Polson. They too couldn't see into the future. Many businesses were discouraged from coming to town. The "City Fathers" (local citizens) didn't want to lose their small town feel. It took WW II to bring this city out of its slump and today it is still a small mid-west city plus an industrial center, and it has not lost its small town feel and ways.

A few years back I asked a local restaurant owner in Polson what he thought about McDonald's coming to town. He said "Great, it will mean more business for me." With all of the proposed subdivisions coming to the area, Polson will need considerably more retail businesses to handle the influx of people.

I think most of the local businesses feel the same way, but won't admit to the fact. I feel if you are in the habit of shopping downtown Polson, I'm sure you will continue to do so.

The current issue of the Salishian has almost a page each of pros and cons for the New Super Wal-Mart Center. The con side is the same old rhetoric we had when Wal-Mart wanted to build our present store. The person who wrote in favor of the Super Wal-Mart Center has done her homework.

I say let progress come, build a Wal-Mart Super Center.
