Man punishes fellow man, not God

| January 27, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor,

Pat Robertson has articulated how God's wrath can come down upon a people, a region, a nation, and even an entire religion. He is addressing what many of us believe in and it is this: We need to remember that we eventually reap the consequences of our actions.

The only problem with Pat Robertson's characterization of this admonition is this: He is shifting the focus to God rather than to where it belongs, upon us human beings.

I was brought up to believe this: God is Love.

So, believing that, I simply cannot bring myself to believe that God would bring "wrath," "devastation," "death," "destruction," "famine," "heartache," and even the "common cold" upon anyone for anything. The logic is simply not there.

And I refuse to compromise my deep belief that God is Love just to be able to put the fear of God into someone or some group which I do not like, or that does not agree with my philosophy.

Bottom line: We, the people, must take full responsibility for all our manmade problems in this world. Leave God out of it. God is Love, only Love, and is not a punishing God. We, the people, have every capability of perpetrating punishment upon our fellow man without God's help.
