James Cleveland McElderry

ST. IGNATIUS — James Cleveland McElderry, 79, broke his earthy bonds on Independence Day at home July 4, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. Born Jan. 15, 1927 in St. Ignatius Mt. He grew up in Pine Creek, Idaho. He met and married Betty Jean Marisch on Oct. 2, 1945, in Spokane. They lived in Pine Creek and moved to St. Ignatius in 1953, where he built their home and raised nine children.

Besides his wife, his love and hobbies included mechanics, working in the mine, driving truck, being in the mountains, boat racing, fixing up old cars and trucks, and being with his family and friends. He also loved fishing, camping and playing his mouth harps and guitar.

He was a proud, honorable loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandpa, and great-great- grandpa. He was loved very much and will be truly missed.

Jim was preceded in death by his infant daughter Susan; his dad, Fredrick Dempster McElderry; his mom, Mary Theresa Felsman; siblings Dan McElderry, Elmer Turnage, Louise Broadbent, and Theresa Kerr. He was the "last of the Mohicans" (Pend d'Oreille).

Survivors include his soulmate, wife Betty of St. Ignatius; his sons Fred (Kay) in South Dakota, Richard (Joanne) in Wyoming, Larry (Bonnie) of Butte, Jerry (Kathy) of Ronan, Mike (Linda) of St. Ignatius, and Melvin (Maureen) of Pablo; his daughters, Diana (Bill) of St. Ignatius, Joann (Bill) in Wyoming, Barbie (Howard) of Dixon; and his other little girl (granddaughter) Melanie (Chris) of Pablo Jim has 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 8, in the St. Ignatius Community Center.
