Missed a chance to educate

Editor:

I am writing to express my opinion on an incident that happened last Friday, June 2, at Mission Dam Reservoir located outside of St. Ignatius.

Friday was the last day of school for many children in St. Ignatius, some girls decided to take advantage of the hot day and go have some clean, sober fun by swimming up at Mission Dam.

Some of these children were first generation descendants, who did not know they needed a permit to swim at the dam. After all they have been swimming at the dam since they were tiny tots.

Along came a CSKT Tribal Game Warden, who missed the golden opportunity to educate these children about permits and the rules of recreation on the reservation. Instead of giving these girls a warning he gave them a ticket.

In my opinion, a warning, an educational lecture of proper CSKT recreational rules, and a pat on the back for having good, sober fun would have been far better justice than any ticket could have brought.
