Wal-Mart issue decision time is near

| June 7, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor,

The Polson city council has a big decision in June.

Are they going to approve the zoning change needed for the Wal-Mart Supercenter to be built at the proposed site or not?

What they should first remember while pondering this is that a decisive majority of Polson and Lake County citizens want the supercenter.

The zoning situation for the land in question, as brought out at the recently planning board meeting, is ambiguous at best and subject to interpretation. Clearly the council has the justification for making this zoning change based on best use principles.

What better thing to happen at the confluence of two major highways than commercial development?

Negative impacts on nearby residents can be greatly mitigated by effective buffers.

People who are for the proposed supercenter know that the opponents have used falsehoods and distortions regarding Wal-Mart to try and further their cause.

The Polson city council should remember that we in the pronounced majority in Polson and Lake County — the majority that wants to new Supercenter — are informed on the issue, that we think the proposed supercenter will greatly improve our quality of life, and that as informed citizens we are just as likely to vote as the opponents of the supercenter.

I urge the Polson city council to do the right thing for democracy. Do not let a decided minority dictate to a majority what the shopping opportunities of said majority are going to be.

Please make the necessary zoning change and allow the supercenter to be built.

Thank you for your consideration.
