Support of Wal-Mart proposal appreciated

| June 22, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor,

I'd just like to say thanks very much to all the others who have had the good conscience to express their support in favor for the Super Wal-Mart project in Polson.

And with all due respect to those people who for one reason or another oppose, I'll say I'm sorry for you and your misguided sense of values that would in this land of the free disallow to certain ones the right and enjoyments of free enterprise.

In one of the dissenting letters to the Leader I read a line that said that you fear the Wal-Mart expansion would mean the loss of our small town charm. To that I say, go talk to certain real estate developers, and don't blame or penalize Wal-Mart.

Another stated that they would exert undo competition to some of the other small businesses. These are bogus and hollow arguments for the most part, and I say made in panic with a hope that some degree of sympathy will be gained from some of the members of the city council by coming forth with these tactics.

But I suppose we who feel strongly about this issue would all like to think that we wield a little clout with our pleas by letter to those in the decision making body. As they say, "you can't blame us for trying."

I would just like them (the council members) to know that we who are in favor hope that they will base their decisions on good sound and even handed business principles that include a lot of fairness. If there are any existing with the members, none should let any old grudges or harbored negative vibes enter into their thought processes in these important decisions.

One major point that I hope would also be thought of and considered deeply in all this is the reputation now known well by all in this area, and that is the killer nature of Highway 93 going both to the north and south. As all know, for years these stretches have been taking their toll. I would certainly not like to learn that one of us in the future had become a fatality statistic for the mere fact we met our end one day while going or coming for the sake of what Missoula or Kalispell stores have to offer, this due to the absence of the Super Wal-Mart store here. This would be so unfair, needless and tragic.
