Need is for truthful media
Editor,
The American media is a powerful force for good and for evil. Historically, hostile foes have used the media to neutralize and overthrow existing systems, such as overthrowing free China after World War II.
Free speech presupposes honesty in reporting. However, the malevolent forces fostering civil strife, civil war and violence feel that freedom of speech includes freedom to lie and slander.
Our present day media is an extreme case of such violations. Over 50 years ago the courts ceased charging the media with libel.
One party has embraced the total communist platform of communist candidate Gus Hall — the end of which is totalitarianism. In the present crisis these un-American, anti-capitalistic, anti-private property, anti-freedom geeks mask their true identity by a tsunami of slander and lies.
They downgrade the great success of our present administration, economically, militarily, politically, socially and morally. The only program they espouse is more taxes, deeper socialism, giving up in Iraq and anything to grab power in the next election.
The tactics are simple: slander and slander, then take a poll, slander some more, and take a poll.
Get enough people to believe the lies and slander, then demand a change of administration.
America is fortunate. President Bush is aware of these corrupt polls. He is on the right track and they are doing everything possible to derail him. We need truth from the media, not lies and hateful slander that confuse and weaken us. The courts need to return to holding the libelous media accountable.
