Edna 'Leona' Stockton Carey

ST. IGNATIUS — Our beloved Edna "Leona" Stockton Carey left this world to be with her Lord and Savior May 26, 2006. She died of natural causes at her home.

She was born Aug. 12, 1910, in Roosevelt, Okla. She was the daughter of Edward A. Stockton and Ada Lee Clark Stockton. Leona married Paul Carey April, 28, 1929, in Kimball, Nebraska. While in Kimball their first child, Dorothy Lee was born. They moved to Akron, Colo., and farmed. While living there Doyle, Dale, Donna Mae, Darlene and Dennis were born. In 1940 they moved to Charlo. Donald "Duane" Delmar and Deana were born in Montana.

Paul and Leona ranched, and owned and operated Mission Feed and Grain in St. Ignatius until they retired in 1968.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ada Stockton; her stepmother Hester Stockton; her brothers James Stockton and Glen Stockton; her sisters Verna Stockton Callaham and Anna Mae Stockton Weber; her half-brothers Bob Stockton and Rawley Stockton; her half-sister Audrey Stockton Ely; her husband Paul Carey of 71 years; her daughter Dorothy Lee Carey LaPorte; sons Doyle Carey and Dennis Carey, and a great-grandson Zachery Najera.

She is survived by her half-sisters Georgeania Stockton Lockwood, Alice Stockton Burke and Ida Stockton Martin; her half-brother Clyde Stockton; her children Dale Carey (Marie), Donna Mae Freeman (Jim), Darlene Haats (Ed), Donald "Duane" Carey (Carolyn), Delmar Carey (Fran and Deana Winebarger (Dave); 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great- grandchildren.

Leona was an avid gardener, 4-H leader, she worked in the school hot lunch room, was active in her church as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, and was a member of the Christian Church in St. Ignatius since its beginning. It was often said, "If you ever went to her home to visit, you never went away hungry."

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 1, at 1 p.m. in the St. Ignatius Christian Church. Interment will be in the Ronan Cemetery.
