Jackson stands on his record
Editor,
Our freedoms and money are at risk every time the state legislature meets in Helena. Quality of life is directly dependent on the dollars in our pocket and our freedom to spend that money as we see fit.
It is time for significant property tax reduction. The so called $400 million surplus in Montana's current budget and the projected $500 million for '07 and '08 is actually excess tax revenue. In other words, you paid too much. This money must to be returned to the taxpayers before it is spent in Helena. I will work vigorously to return that money to you and I will continue to pursue the significant property tax reductions that I did in the past sessions while serving as a member of the House Tax Committee. If additional money is to be spent, let it be scrutinized by the appropriation process and be added into the budget for approval by both houses and the Governor.
Second, the marriage penalty in the Montana State Tax Law needs to be eliminated. Married people who file jointly should not be penalized. Strong families are the strength of our state. Our married couples need relief from this financial distress.
Third, good paying jobs are needed to provide sufficient income to keep our young families in Montana. Wise use of our natural resources and better markets for our business, farm and ranch products are needed to rejuvenate our economy.
Our liberties also include personal property rights, water rights and the inalienable rights provided by the Second Amendment to our Constitution. We must vigorously defend our right to access public lands and water ways. Proactive planning must be rapidly completed to create a balance which will protect individual freedoms while meeting the needs of our community.
Experience does matter. As your Senator from District 5, I will continue to fight for your freedom and your wallet. I don't believe that the government should be your mother. Self-reliance and a small efficient government are the hallmarks of my legislative career.
If you believe you should be in charge of your life and your budget, I ask for your vote on Nov. 7.
