Salvation Army needs bell ringers; apply now

| November 8, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor,

The Salvation Army bells have been ringing for more than 100 years. But Lake County may not hear the bells jingle this year if more people do not apply to ring them.

Your help is needed. Paid applicants and volunteers are needed to man the four stations in Lake County. Bell ringers are paid $7.25 per hour, which is more than the Montana minimum wage of $5.15. As a bell ringer, you would help a national organization that provides assistance to everyone from the homeless to the hungry to those who can't afford the fuel to get to a doctor's appointment. The money collected in Lake County stays in Lake County.

Recently a family who moved from Idaho to a small town in Montana had a daughter who was on seizure medicine. They could not get state aid right away and girl had to have medicine costing a couple hundred dollars every several weeks. The girl could not wait for two weeks. The Salvation Army came through to get her the medicine.

The Salvation Army provides help for those being evicted, for those whose utilities have been shut off and for victims of domestic violence. Also, 25 children from Lake County are sent to summer camp at Camp Gifford in Deer Lake, Wash., every year.

Volunteers are wonderful; even if you could only work on the weekends or limited times during the week, every moment is appreciated. Clubs, school, church and community groups are encouraged to get involved.

If you want to help this holiday season, apply at the Polson Job Service or call me at 833-2443. Keep the tradition alive in our community.
