Wegner's school history program was appreciated
Editor,
On Sept. 25, the Big Arm Association attendees enjoyed a delightful presentation by Joyce Decker Wegner on the local history of Big Arm School and other rural schools.
Through numerous photographs and wonderful stories residents were enlightened about the long history of Big Arm School.
The school was built in 1911 when the reservation was first opened to homesteaders and has been a vital center of the community until just eight years ago.
The school was closed in 1952 but then the building was used as a library, a community club and even a polling place.
A very special thank you to Joyce for the most interesting presentation we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Joyce recently retired from 16 years as Lake County Superintendent of Schools and will be dedicating the beginning of her retirement to finishing two books on the history of the county schools. These books with their unique stories and photographs will be a wonderful addition to everyone's bookshelf.
The evening was enhanced by wonderful desserts brought by volunteers that made the evening even sweeter, thank you good neighbors!
The Big Arm Association on behalf of the community would also like to thank 28 wonderful people who braved the cold and the rain on Sept. 16 to pick up garbage from six miles of Highway 93. Big Arm is a beautiful place to live, not just because of the views, but because these special people are our neighbors.
The Big Arm Association usually has its monthly meetings on the fourth Monday of every month at the Big Arm fire hall and everyone is welcome.
