Whole herd of skunks dispatched

Editor,

Re: "The skunks may have won"

I read the article in the Leader Sept. 21, Page A9, and wanted to pass on the information we got regarding skunk hunting.

My mother-in-law lives off Rocky Point in Ferguson Heights Addition, out of city limits. (We were told the Polson Police Animal Control doesn't cover that area as it is out of the city limits). Anyway, she had a skunk living under her deck, so we contact the Polson Animal Shelter where she obtained a trap for a $50 deposit, which would be returned to her when the trap was returned.

The Animal Shelter man provided her with an old blanket, some cat food for bait, and instructions to wrap the trap with the blanket, set the trap with the cat food trailed into the trap.

Once caught, we could take the skunk for a ride at least 17 miles out of town or put it down.

Well, we couldn't think of anyone who would like a skunk dropped off in their yard any more than we would, and we didn't want to get all stinky moving the trap. And neither of us wanted to shoot it.

So, we called the Sheriff's office and they gave us the name and number of a gentleman who would help take care of a skunk for a small fee and dispose of it. Well, we were excited!

Ten skunks later my mother-in-law and the "Skunk Man" decided they had done their best clearing out her yard and the neighborhood of skunks.

The "Skunk Man," a very nice gentleman as described to me by my mother-in-law, was Cory Richwine. I'm sure Mr. Richwine was as exhausted as my mother-in-law after all this skunk business, but he sure was a blessing for her and us.

Maybe Mr. Richwine has had his fill of skunk hunting this year as we call it "the Year of the Skunk," but he may be able to offer some helpful suggestions.
