Fr. Gustav H. Schmidt, S.J.

ST. IGNATIUS — Fr. Gustav H. Schmidt, S.J., 71, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Murray-Weigel Hall in Bronx, N.Y.

Fr. Schmidt was born on May 9, 1935. In 1953 he entered the Society of Jesus at the Jesuit Novitiate of St. Andrew on Hudson in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1966. He came to St. Ignatius Mission in 1982 as a Pastoral Assistant to Fr. Joseph Retzel, S.J., and became Pastor of the three missions from 1995 to 2000.

Fr. Schmidt served the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission for over 18 years retiring in November 2000 because of health reasons and he returned to the Bronx where he died.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Sept. 28 (today), in Murray-Weigel Hall Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville, N.Y.

Fr. Schmidt is survived by two sisters, Annie Paxson and Lois Doremus.

Local memorial services will held on Sunday, Oct. 1, at St. Ignatius Catholic Mission at the 9:15 a.m. Mass; in Sacred Heart Mission in Arlee at the 11:15 a.m. Mass and at St. John Berchman Mission in the Jocko Valley at 5 p.m. A potluck dinner is tentatively planned after the St. John Berchman Mass. It will be held in the Sacred Heart Mission at Arlee.
