Jackson terms debate challenge 'suspect'

| September 28, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor,

This letter is in response to my opponent, Ric Smith, who did not contact me before he mailed his letter proposing a series of debates to local newspapers. I will answer him in the same manner.

Sending a detailed list of debates and times to all of the local newspapers before contacting me is certainly suspect. Contrary to your implication, the people of Senate District 5 had five opportunities before the primary election to attend forums with Senate District 5 candidates: Bigfork, Swan Lake, Lakeside, Finley Point-Montecahto Club and Polson.

Also, there are several forums already being planned for the general election by impartial people. The Bigfork Chamber has one scheduled for Oct. 10. I plan to be at this forum and others that have not yet been announced. These forums will provide an opportunity for us to present our best ideas and run a positive campaign. Also, the media provides a public service by printing information on all of the candidates and some of the radio stations provide interviews.

I have also done my best to meet as many Senate District 5 people as possible.

I prefer to talk "one on one" with people. I learn a great deal going "door to door" by listening to people's concerns and ideas and answering questions.

My phone number (756-8344) has been made available through mailings and the media.

I appreciate the calls I have had and look forward to many more. For the reasons stated above, I decline your invitation.
